General Summary

Processes specimens for analysis and performs specified laboratory procedures under the supervision of department leadership. Follows the proper procedure in conjunction with the established quality control and instrument maintenance as defined by procedure manuals.

Principal Job Functions

Performs Anatomic Pathology specimen accessioning and processing per written procedures as directed by department leadership.

Reviews requisitions/paperwork for test orders and adds appropriate notation to assure all information is entered accurately into computer system.

Performs instrument/equipment preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation.

Maintains reagent and supply inventory.

Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA)-designated General Supervisor, performs laboratory testing according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner.

Documents data entry of patient/specimen information and results into the computer using laboratory standards, policies, and procedures.

Performs routine and more complex laboratory procedures on specimens as directed by department leadership.

Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data. Analyzes unacceptable quality control results and troubleshoots shifts or trends as necessary.

Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary. Notifies immediate supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls Service regarding issues.

Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting patient care testing and results, appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly, concisely and courteously; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.

Education and Experience

Education and training equivalent to 60 semester hours from an accredited institution that include:

Six (6) semester hours of chemistry
Six (6) semester hours of biology
Twelve (12) additional semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology courses in any combination.

Bachelor degree preferred.

Previous work experience in a medical laboratory is preferred.
