Job SummaryResponsible for duties supporting departmental efficiencies, including scheduling, registration, patient pre‑admission and admission, reception, and discharge functions. Obtain complete and accurate patient demographic information and employ proper, compliant patient liability collection techniques before, during and after date of service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Greet patients following Conifer Standards of Care, provide world‑class customer service, complete full patient registration at date of service, adhere to financial & cash‑control policies, and thoroughly explain & secure hospital & patient legal forms (Advance Directives, Conditions of Services, Consent for Treatment, Important Message from Medicare, EMTALA, etc.). Scan Protected Health Information and create & file patient information packets for upcoming services.
May assist with scheduling diagnostic procedures. - Educate patients about financial liabilities, employ compliant collection techniques, perform hospital cash reconciliation and secure payment entry in adherence to policies.
- Secure medical‑necessity checks/verification per CMS, verify insurance benefits & eligibility, complete registration financial clearance work‑lists, obtain authorizations for scheduled & unscheduled services, and secure inpatient visit notifications to payors. May coordinate post‑discharge care.
Skills and Abilities
- Minimum typing skills of 35 wpm.
- Working knowledge of PC/CRT/printer.
- Knowledge of function and relationships within a hospital preferred.
- Customer service skills and experience.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Understanding of third‑party payer requirements preferred.
- Understanding of compliance standards preferred.
- Must perform essential duties in at least two Patient Access service areas, including Emergency Department.
- Use proper negotiation techniques to collect money owed by patients/guarantors.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external clients.
- Interpret physician orders, medical terminology and insurance cards appropriately.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- 0–1 year in a customer‑service role.
- 0–1 year of administrative experience in a medical facility, health insurance, or related area preferred.
- Some college coursework preferred.
- Required to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods.
- Resolve physician’s office and patient issues; may experience extreme patient volumes and uncooperative patients.
- Occasionally lift/carry items up to 25 lbs.
- Frequent prolonged standing, sitting, and walking.
- Occasionally push a wheelchair to assist patients.
- Hospital administration.
- Work in patient‑care locations that may involve exposure to life‑threatening conditions.
- Must be available to work required hours and days based on departmental/system demands.
