At DHHS, everything we do is driven by one mission:
Helping People Live Better Lives.

As part of our Office of Legislative Services, you’ll be at the heart of how state policy is shaped, monitored, and implemented. This isn’t a typical internship—you will play an active role in supporting meaningful legislation that affects thousands of Nebraskans.

The DHHS Office of Legislative Services is seeking a motivated, curious, and detail-oriented intern to support our work during Nebraska’s legislative cycle. This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands‑on experience in public policy, government operations, and legislative compliance.

Interns will work closely with legislative analysts, policy advisors, and agency leadership to learn how state agencies collaborate with lawmakers, track legislation, and analyze impacts across DHHS divisions.

What You’ll Do (Duties & Responsibilities)
  • Assist with tracking legislation and interim studies throughout the session.
  • Monitor and attend legislative hearings to observe policy making in action.
  • Maintain and update internal databases used for bill tracking and agency coordination.
  • Conduct research on assigned topics or policy areas.
  • Support the team in reviewing and monitoring bill implementation across DHHS.
  • Coordinate follow‑up information after hearings, including gathering documentation or assisting with summaries.
  • This internship is designed for students eager to understand complex government systems, strengthen their research abilities, and contribute to a high‑impact team environment.
Why Intern with DHHS Legislative Services?

Because few internships offer such a direct look at how policy becomes practice.

What Makes This Internship Stand Out
  • Front‑row experience in state government.
  • Witness legislative hearings, policy making discussions, and the behind‑the‑scenes processes of the Nebraska Unicameral.
  • Meaningful work that supports statewide impact. Your efforts help DHHS better understand, respond to, and implement legislation that affects Nebraskans of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Mentorship from policy and legislative experts. You’ll work alongside experienced analysts who are eager to help you grow, learn, and explore your career path.
  • Strengthen your résumé for future roles. This internship provides practical skills in research, government operations, compliance, communication, and policy analysis—tools valuable in any public‑sector or advocacy career.
  • Explore careers in government, public administration, policy, and law. Whether you plan to attend graduate school, law school, or pursue state government roles, this internship provides a powerful foundation.
