HOURS: Monday through Friday 6:00am – 2:30pm; alternating weekends 6:00am – 10:00am
REPORTS TO: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Manager – Chief Operator
JOB DEFINITION
The Wastewater Treatment Operator III is a skilled working position responsible for the conscientious and proper operation of the wastewater treatment plant. This position is required to assist the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operations Manager – Chief Operator with the operation of the wastewater treatment plant. Duties may include maintenance of buildings, grounds, and all related equipment, testing and observations required for the proper operation and to satisfy the appropriate reporting agency regulations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. - Supervise and participate in the operations of the wastewater treatment plant.
- Perform quality control and process control functions.
- Perform precise laboratory tests and record the results.
- Routinely inspects plant to detects and report any indication of plant or system malfunctions.
- Compile, maintain, and update plant operations, logs, and reports.
- Perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operations.
- Check and maintain all equipment.
- Perform routine plant cleaning and maintenance.
- Paint buildings and equipment.
- Calibrate chemical feed equipment and laboratory equipment.
- Operate mowers and power equipment.
- Ensure adherence to safe working practices and procedures.
- Assist in the training and supervision of trainees and interns.
- Perform other job related duties and special projects as required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art wastewater treatment methods and procedures including but not limited to a laboratory and laboratory equipment.
- Ability to operate chemical feed pumps, electrical controls, motor starters, and water test instruments.
- Extensive knowledge of the required legal standards and reports.
- Extensive knowledge of chemical ratios and operation of related equipment.
- Ability to express thoughts clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to keep organized legible records.
- Ability to read well and grasp the meaning of written communications.
- Ability to understand physical and biological processes.
- Ability to understand general chemistry.
- Ability to use basic arithmetic and geometry.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be a graduate from an accredited high school or hold a certificate of high school equivalency (GED).
- Must have three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment systems.
- Must be certified by the State of Alabama as a Grade III Wastewater Treatment Operator, or higher.
- Must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability.
- Must possess adequate computer skills.
- Must be willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops.
