Woody encroachment is one of the most significant and rapidly intensifying drivers of grassland loss in western US rangelands. In response, conservation leaders across the region – spanning federal/state government, NGOs, industry, university, and private landowner collaboratives – have identified a critical gap in workforce development, training, and technical knowledge needed to implement new planning and design protocols that reduce vulnerability to woody encroachment.
Responsibilities- Develop scientific content and curriculum
- Support multi-partner engagement and outreach planning
- Lead logistics for trainings and technical transfer activities
- Work closely with a collaborative team of scientists, government agencies, NGOs, and industry to coordinate efforts to improve workforce capacity to improve management of woody encroachment across Great Plains grasslands.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in natural resources, rangeland ecology, environmental science, fire ecology, or a related field
- Demonstrated knowledge of woody encroachment, Great Plains rangeland systems, and applied grassland conservation
- Willingness to travel periodically across the Great Plains for courses and workshops
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing or delivering trainings, curriculum, workshops, or technical guidance for conservation practitioners
- Familiarity with extension, NRCS planning processes, and tech-transfer programs
- Experience coordinating multi-partner programs
- Ability to synthesize and communicate complex ecological information to diverse audiences of practitioners
- Experience in program coordination, logistics, or project management
