Job Description

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system.

Pay rate $19.941 per hour; promotion to Technician II achieves $22.938 per hour.

Exciting Added Pay Differentials: $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service, $1/hour after 3 years, and $1/hour after 5 years.

Job Duties
  • Perform inspection duties on highway construction projects, including preliminary surveying, construction surveying, and ROW staking.
  • Sample and test construction materials and document contractors’ daily work.
  • Read and interpret construction and bridge plans.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Operate snow removal equipment as needed.
  • Work varying hours outdoors on highway construction projects; schedule may include nights, evenings, weekends.
  • Receive all necessary training, materials, equipment, and safety apparel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Age 18 or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • For Technician II: experience or coursework in surveying, materials testing, or field inspections; or completion of NDOT Math, Highway Plan Reading, and Bridge Plan reading courses, or an associate’s degree in civil engineering technology or related field.
  • Must obtain Class A or B CDL within 90 days through in‑house training.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • May require overnight travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in surveying, road construction, materials testing, record keeping, trigonometry, geometry.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment or snow removal equipment.
  • Computer experience: word processing, spreadsheets, Site Manager, GEOPAK, Micro Station.
