Position: Adventure specialist

Specialist Positions

At BB Camp, Specialist positions include Aquatics, Adventures (ropes, archery, rock wall), Athletics, Arts, Drama, Dance, STEM, Music, Garden, Israeli Culture, and Jewish Enrichment! These positions are responsible for the development and execution of programming in their specialty area, the upkeep of their used spaces on Camp, and leading activity sessions for campers. Specialists should have prior knowledge or experience in their specialty area.

Adventures Specialist Overview

Adventures Specialists are trained and certified to safely and securely harness and belay campers on our high ropes courses. First and foremost, you are responsible for ensuring campers are safe and secure before participating in any adventure activities. You are also responsible for ensuring campers are comfortable and have a positive experience. While this will be your everyday, many of them are showing courage by trying any adventures activity.

When you are not performing your duties as an Adventures Specialist, you will be responsible for your assigned cabin and serve as a Bunk Counselor for your cabin campers. You will act as their role model, acting as their older sibling, parent, and biggest supporter. You will set the example for them as we sing and cheer at the flagpole (Degel) before meals and guide them in keeping themselves and the cabin clean.

This role will strengthen your leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, preparing you for your future career.

Essential Functions
  • Develop the necessary program plans and rain plans prior to campers’ arrival re program plans with supervisor and Camp leadership team before campers’ arrival.
  • Be early and ready to lead your assigned activity.
  • Set up for and break down from all activity periods.
  • Assist in the coordination of activities for all age groups, as assigned by the programming team, as scheduled for each unit.
  • Maintain facilities; keep a safe and clean activity area.
  • Must clean up and return program supplies to their appropriate location after leading a scheduled activity.
  • Assist in all activity areas within your specialty when assigned and/or requested.
  • When not assigned to lead an activity, you are required to be with your cabin and fulfill your duties as a bunk counselor.
  • Coordinate with the Specialist Coordinator on purchasing and procuring supplies in advance.
  • Act as a general resource for other Camp activities relating to your specialty.
  • Participate in other Camp programming as assigned.
  • Exercise good judgment and always be safety conscious.
  • Attend in-camp training sessions and staff meetings as required.
Compensation

$2100/season

Requirements
  • Responsible for the upkeep, safety, and running of program areas and their on-site supplies:
    The Ropes Course and The Zipline/Climbing Tower.
  • Maintain daily use logs and service notes on equipment.
  • Must be comfortable working from heights up to 40 feet in the air.
  • Must be capable of exerting physical effort while carrying up to 20lbs of gear.
  • Must ensure strict adherence to all safety codes and rules.
  • Must be ropes course trained and able to lead or support any ropes activity at Camp.
  • Report to the Specialist Coordinator for all questions or concerns.
  • Ability to communicate with both campers and peers.
  • Have a basic understanding of child development.
  • Demonstrate maturity, respect, and kindness.
  • Ability to give and accept guidance and support.
  • A willingness and ability to ask for help.
  • Ability to assist in activities, both leading and supporting.
  • Be able to work professionally with a variety of staff members and campers.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for all campers.
  • Training and experience in the skills and safety of one’s specialty position.
  • Strong enthusiasm for, and broad-based knowledge of the specialty.
  • Ability to follow defined teaching requirements, while developing own methods of presentation to campers.
  • Must be able to effectively teach and lead programs to groups of 15-30.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and, if applicable, fingerprinting.
  • Must be able to pass the pre-employment reference checks.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen.
  • Must be able to provide a copy of his/her own social security card for W-4 documentation.
  • Must be able to provide applicable documentation(s) for I-9 in order to establish identity and authorization to work in the US.
