Your ImpactThe OSP Field Engineer provides training and supportive engineering services through highly detailed collection of telecommunications information from the job site. This position requires a working level of knowledge in all technical aspects of fiber networks. The successful candidate is responsible for in‑person validation of the existing field design and layout of the telecommunications network to include aerial, buried and underground fiber network design and layout, underground conduit, handhole, building entrance, and riser facilities.
May serve as an informal lead to more junior staff from time to time.
- Identify, photograph, and document detailed information of required facilities, including cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes, and other outside plant infrastructure.
- Capture accurate measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances from existing/proposed OSP facilities to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
- Identify power and communication facilities and ownership on utility poles.
- Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
- Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team.
- Identify relevant obstructions to fiber placement and provide proposed mitigation strategy.
- Understand OSP construction techniques.
- Read and understand digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
- Use tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finder, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinder.
- Use electronic devices such as iPad, iPhone, laptop, file sharing, and email.
- 3+ years of experience in the fiber‑optic/telecommunications construction industry.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of outside plant activities (fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design), and make‑ready issues.
- Experience obtaining right‑of‑way and easements, and notating field notes for desktop teams.
- Ability to identify conflicts with existing outside plant facilities, and route lines and equipment.
- Familiar with GIS (ESRI, shapefile).
- Identify different types of utilities, potential conflicts, and violations based on regulatory standards (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC, etc.).
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD (a plus).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; ability to pass pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
- Good organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds.
- Extensive travel; work on site for projects in various states.
- Work outdoors 95% of the time; travel up to 100% by air or vehicle, may require overnight stay up to two weeks; short‑notice travel.
- Follow OSHA, state, and local safety standards.
- Walk up to 3 miles per day on various terrain; work in poor weather conditions.
- Work safely with or without supervision.
Base Pay Range: $24 USD - $29 USD.
