This recruitment is being conducted under the Operation Hire Hawaii (OH‑HI) project, a targeted outreach initiative featuring an expedited hiring process that fast‑tracks qualified applicants into job opportunities throughout Hawai‘i.

Shift Work:
Applicants must be willing and able to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
This is the entry trainee level in the Biosecurity Inspector series, designed to provide a career‑oriented introduction to the background, philosophy, concepts, scope, and interrelationships of the state’s plant and non‑domestic animal quarantine and pest‑control programs. On‑the‑job training assignments provide practical understanding and initial introduction to the organization, programs, policies, and objectives of the agency, as well as preliminary experience in the application of principles, procedures, work processes, techniques, and scientific reference material to actual situations.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Legal Authorization To Work:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or otherwise eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. - Education: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas:
Agricultural, Landscape, or Integrated Pest Management;
Entomology;
Horticulture;
Nematology;
Plant and Environmental Protection Science;
Plant Pathology;
Tropical Agriculture and the Environment; or Tropical Plant and Soil Science; OR- Biological or Agricultural Science – the education must have included coursework described in (A) and (B) below:
- One (1) course in entomology, nematology, pest management, plant and environmental protection science, plant pathology, tropical agriculture and the environment, virology, OR related courses; AND
- One (1) course in agroecology, agronomy, botany, horticulture, plant physiology, tropical plant and soil science, weed science, OR related courses.
- Driver's License:
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. - Special Requirement:
Applicants must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted, with or without reasonable accommodation. - Substitutions Allowed:
Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply. - Federal Criminal History Records Check:
In accordance with federal regulations, persons considered for employment in positions requiring unescorted access to secured airport areas must undergo a pre‑employment fingerprint‑based criminal history check. Prospective employees must not have been convicted, or found “not guilty by reason of insanity,” of a disqualifying criminal offense within ten years of the application.
