Description:

A School Bus Driver provides safe and efficient transportation so that students may enjoy the fullest possible advantage from the district's curriculum and extracurricular activities.

Qualifications:
  • License:

    • Required – Valid Drivers License and willingness to be trained by the District to receive a CDL license and Illinois School Bus Permit.

    • Preferred – Valid Drivers License with CDL endorsement and Illinois School Bus Permit.
  • Education:

    • Required – High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Experience:

    • Preferred – Prior school bus driver experience and Spanish speaking ability are a plus.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Observe all mandatory Federal, State and local safety laws/regulations for school buses.
  • Perform all required pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and complete applicable forms.
  • Maintain a seating chart for each route.
  • Follow written directions.
  • Contact parents when required by route selection.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Perform basic first aid and CPR as appropriate and maintain awareness of medical alerts.
  • Maintain student discipline at all times and report behavior problems.
  • Work effectively with students of different grade levels, abilities or program placement.
  • Transport only authorized students and discharge them only at authorized stops.
  • Report all accidents and complete required reports.
  • Exercise responsible leadership on in‑district or out‑of‑district charters.
  • Be punctual and maintain assigned route schedule.
  • Successfully complete required training programs and courses established by the state or school district.
  • Comply with all procedures and policies established by the Board of Education and the district Transportation Department.
  • Attend all required meetings as directed.
  • Accurately complete all forms, records, reports and documentation as required by state regulations and/or district policy.
  • Clean and service the school bus, including interior cleaning, exterior washing, fuel installation, and verification of fluids.
  • Report mechanical failures or problems in writing on the same day as observed.
  • Follow procedures for loading and unloading students.
  • Demonstrate competence in Federal, Illinois and Lake County school bus laws and training for student/staff safety.
  • Arrive and perform all duties essential to school bus operation.
  • Relate effectively with parents, staff and the public within a diverse community.
  • Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.

    Technical:

    Must pass state or federal medical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and criminal background check; maintain a minimum three‑year excellent driving record with no suspensions or DUI convictions; and be able to drive and perform all duties essential to safe school bus operation.

    Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, parents, businesses and community; strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills; rapid problem‑solving; empathy, humanism and open‑mindedness; teamwork; and sound judgment in dealing with people.
