Base pay range

$20.40/hr - $30.60/hr

Major Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and STAT ECG procedures.
  • Troubleshoot problems associated with ECGs, such as calming anxious or distracting pediatric patients.
  • Prepare patients for procedures while respecting privacy in an empathetic and gentle manner.
  • Obtain relevant patient history.
  • Maintain a timely flow of patient room assignments or work areas.
  • Enter or edit data on the ECG machine before transmitting it to the mainframe.
  • Perform Holter and Event Monitor applications, removals, and processing; troubleshoot Holter and Event recorder equipment.
  • Conduct pacemaker checks, transmit data, and ensure results are scanned into the patient EMR.

Provides clerical functions necessary for physician interpretation & confirmation, department record‑keeping & patient billing.

  • Ensure appropriate procedures have been ordered & charged.
  • Collect all information for the interpreting physician and submit the study for review within two hours of order entry.
  • Complete procedure paperwork immediately following the study.
  • Edit ECGs, Holters, and Event reports and distribute all paperwork to cardiologists for review and signatures.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all tests performed, including listings of all EKGs, Holters, etc.; maintain daily counts, monthly reports, and data for P.I. activity.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities.
  • Maintain printers, replace cartridges, or initiate service calls for all printers.
  • Understand and utilize downtime procedures as needed.
Interactions with medical staff, nurses & other hospital departments regarding patient care & departmental procedures
  • Provide a copy of each ECG at the Nursing Station.
  • Identify arrhythmias or critical findings and report them immediately, as well as any other acute changes in patient condition; notify physicians and nursing personnel timely and follow critical values reporting criteria and documentation.
  • Coordinate patient care with the patient’s nurse and/or other ancillary departments.
  • Communicate with the patient’s nurse if an ECG cannot be completed, e.g., due to dressings, central lines, or uncooperative patients.
Participation in professional development & process improvement teams
  • Present short in‑services to familiarize the department with the ECG Technologist role, new or updated procedures as required.
  • Attend on‑campus or within‑Advocate system conferences to increase knowledge on cardiology, teamwork, or other subjects and actively pursue continuing education opportunities.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date status with all mandatory system education and annual requirements.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings in person or via conference call; read minutes and stay current with updates within Advocate and the department.
  • Attend department in‑service programs to ensure technical competence.
  • Maintain CPR certification and stay current with any licensure requirements.
Provides training assistance to new employees and physicians
  • Provide education & troubleshooting assistance.
  • Complete the orientee’s checklist and return it to the Cardiology Manager.
  • Complete all annual technical and/or arrhythmia competencies and return them to the Cardiology Manager.
Maintains a safe, organized & efficient work environment
  • Comply with safety standards & infection control practices.
  • Report equipment malfunctions immediately to clinical engineering and remove equipment from use; report operational problems & inventory depletion immediately to Cardiology Management.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the department & equipment.
Education/Experience Required

High school graduate. One year of ECG or‑related experience, or enrollment in a clinical health program. Current CNA or EMT preferred. The position requires recognition of the needs & behaviors of a variety of age groups, including an understanding of child growth & development, normal adolescent behavior, and signs of normal aging; prior experience with various age groups is preferred.
