Overview

North Shore School District 112 is seeking a Special Education Teacher – Intensive Learning Support to serve students who receive services through our CORE (Continuum Opportunities for Readiness and Engagement) program. CORE classrooms are designed for students who require significant structure, individualized supports, and intentional instruction to access learning. The CORE program focuses on teaching the foundational skills of how to learn, with particular emphasis on communication, behavior regulation, and developing reciprocal relationships with peers and adults.

Students receiving services through CORE have opportunities to participate with their general education peers as determined by the IEP team. The ideal candidate is a compassionate, reflective, and highly skilled educator who values collaboration and is committed to creating inclusive, student-centered learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities Instructional Planning & Preparation
  • Design and implement highly structured, individualized instruction aligned to IEP goals, curriculum standards, and evidence-based special education practices
  • Explicitly teach foundational learning skills, including communication, engagement, self-regulation, and readiness to learn
  • Use ongoing assessment and progress monitoring to inform instruction and adjust supports
  • Incorporate assistive technology, visual supports, and instructional tools to increase access and independence
  • Demonstrate deep understanding of students' strengths, needs, cultures, languages, and learning profiles
Learning Environment & Classroom Management
  • Create a predictable, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes safety, belonging, and engagement
  • Establish clear routines, expectations, and transitions that maximize instructional time and reduce barriers to learning
  • Implement proactive behavior supports and respond consistently and effectively to student needs
  • Maintain organized, accessible learning spaces that support intensive instruction and student independence
Instruction & Student Engagement
  • Deliver clear, engaging instruction with intentional structure and appropriate pacing
  • Use high-quality questioning, modeling, feedback, and reinforcement to promote student growth
  • Adjust instruction responsively to meet students' academic, behavioral, and communication needs
  • Support students in developing independence and understanding their own learning goals
Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with general education teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, and administrators to support inclusion and continuity of services
  • Maintain accurate instructional, compliance, and documentation records (IEPs, progress reports, data collection)
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with families, honoring partnership and shared decision-making
  • Actively participate in school and district initiatives, meetings, and professional learning
  • Engage in ongoing reflection, professional growth, and ethical practice
  • Demonstrate professionalism and a commitment to child-centered, strengths-based decision-making
Qualifications
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with LBS1 endorsement
  • Experience working with students requiring intensive or highly structured supports preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and appreciation of cultural diversity
  • Ability to effectively integrate instructional and assistive technology
