QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • Professional Educator License with Administrative Endorsement
  • ESL Endorsement required
  • Bilingual endorsement (Spanish) preferred
  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field
  • Successful teaching experience working with Multilingual Learners and/or in World Language programs
  • Strong knowledge of WIDA Standards, ACCESS for ELLs, and best practices in multilingual instruction
  • Knowledge of Illinois requirements for TBE and TPI programming
  • Demonstrated instructional leadership and supervisory skills
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Department Chair for Language Acquisition and World Languages serves as a building-based administrator with responsibility for instructional leadership, staff supervision, and program coordination for Multilingual Learners and World Language programming at the high school level. This position also maintains a limited teaching assignment of two (2) classes per day to remain connected to instructional practice.

The Department Chair works closely with the Principal, Associate and Assistant Principals, and the Director of Language Acquisition to ensure high-quality instruction, compliance with state and federal requirements, and equitable access to programming for multilingual learners. This role balances administrative leadership with direct instructional responsibilities to effectively support staff, students, and families.

REPORTS TO

Principal and Associate Principal of Instruction and Future Readiness

SUPERVISES

Certified and non-certified staff assigned to the Language Acquisition and World Language programs, including formal supervision and evaluation responsibilities in accordance with district procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Administrative & Instructional Leadership
  • Serve as a building-based administrator providing leadership, supervision, and support for Multilingual Learner and World Language programs.
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned staff in accordance with district evaluation processes, timelines, and expectations.
  • Provide instructional leadership focused on high-quality, research-based practices for multilingual learners and world language students.
  • Teach two (2) classes per day in World Language coursework or as assigned.
Program Oversight & Compliance
  • Oversee the high school implementation of ML programming, including compliance with TBE and TPI requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Language Acquisition to ensure alignment with district frameworks, expectations, and compliance requirements.
  • Support coordination and administration of ACCESS for ELLs and other language-related assessments.
  • Analyze language proficiency and academic data to inform instructional practices, staffing decisions, and program improvements.
  • Lead and oversee systems and processes that support students in attaining the Seal of Biliteracy.
Staffing, Scheduling, & Collaboration
  • Participate in staffing, scheduling, and placement decisions related to Language Acquisition and World Language programming.
  • Collaborate with counselors, student services, and administrative teams to ensure appropriate supports and course placement for multilingual learners.
  • Serve as a member of the building administrative team and the Department Chair Council.
Communication, Family Engagement & Equity
  • Foster effective communication among department staff, administration, families, and district partners.
  • Support family engagement efforts for multilingual learners in collaboration with district and building teams.
  • Advocate for equitable access, inclusive practices, and student-centered decision-making for multilingual learners.
  • Serve as a liaison to key committees, including the Bilingual Parent Advisory Council (BPAC), District Equity Team, and Framework 220 team.
Budget & Resource Management
  • Assist in developing and managing departmental budgets in alignment with building and district guidelines.
  • Support selection, implementation, and monitoring of instructional materials and resources.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

This position requires strong organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills to manage both instructional and administrative responsibilities. The role involves teaching responsibilities, frequent meetings, supervision of staff, collaboration with families and district personnel, and regular use of computer-based systems. Occasional evening commitments may be required to support family engagement and school initiatives.
