QualificationsA Masters Degree in Psychology and a one year ISBE approved supervised internship. Valid Illinois PEL in School Psychology. National Certification from NASP highly recommended.
Direct SupervisorDirector of Special Services and dependent upon assignment, Sector Supervisor or Program Principal or District Special Education Coordinator.
OverviewThe School Psychologist is responsible for the evaluation of students and serves as a member of the multidisciplinary team. The School Psychologist provides consultation and direct services to special education classes and member districts. The School Psychologist has specialized training in both psychology and education. The School Psychologist teams with educators, parents, and other mental health professionals to ensure that every child learns in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment.
PerformanceResponsibilities
- Maintain adequate daily attendance.
- Individual and group assessment: use a wide variety of standardized and curriculum‑based techniques at individual, group, and systems levels to evaluate intellectual functioning, academic skills, learning aptitudes, personality and emotional development, social skills, learning environments and school climate, eligibility for special services, and adaptive behavior.
- Counseling with students and parents: individual (short‑term, long‑term, crisis intervention), group (development of social skills, support groups for special issues).
- In‑service education: for school personnel, parents/community, and students.
- Consultation: provide healthy alternatives to teachers, parents, and administrators for problems in learning and behavior; help others understand child development and its impact; strengthen relationships between educators, parents, and community services.
- Program evaluation/research: apply curriculum‑based assessment to program effectiveness, evaluate effectiveness of curriculum materials with specific populations, review recent scientifically based research relevant to assessment, intervention, and instruction.
- Intervention: work face‑to‑face with children and families; teach conflict resolution and problem‑solving skills; provide social skills training, behavior management, and other strategies; assist families and schools in dealing with crises such as separation and loss.
- Community networking: liaise as needed between family, school, and community support agencies/professionals; provide information to community groups.
