Responsibilities
  • Identify children with educational, social, and emotional problems who need special help;
  • Serve as a consultant to administrators, classroom teachers, parents, and other school personnel on matters related to the adjustment and educational problems of individual children and groups of pupils;
  • Give direct services to children and their parents;
  • Promote an educational climate that is in harmony with the educational, social, and psychological needs of children.
Specific Duties
  • Educate school personnel about the role and functions of a School Psychologist;
  • Conduct preliminary and comprehensive psycho‑educational studies to appraise the social, emotional, behavioral, and educational status and needs of children referred for school psychological services or for additional supports;
  • Make recommendations to school personnel pertaining to the management of pupils in the school environment, educational adjustments, and placement of exceptional children in special education classes and programs;
  • Assess and communicate the results of psycho‑educational diagnosis to school personnel and parents through conferences and written reports;
  • Facilitate all initial and re‑evaluation IEP meetings (with the exception of Speech and Language – Only and OT/PT);
  • Attend annual meetings in which a change of placement is being considered;
  • Create “save as” documents for IEP amendments and unfinalize IEPs upon the request of a case manager;
  • Assume the role of LEA Representative upon request of the Principal for initial and re‑evaluation IEP meetings;
  • Provide follow‑up services to determine the extent of implementation of recommendations and to appraise the efficacy of changes;
  • Participate in in‑service programs, formal and informal, to help school personnel recognize and deal appropriately with the needs of children;
  • Work with parents to help them understand the needs of their children and manage their behavior constructively;
  • Participate in efforts to improve the mental health climate of the schools and contribute to the solution of psycho‑social‑educational problems such as drug usage, truancy, racial conflict, suicide, depression, anxiety, drop‑outs, social skills, etc.;
  • Function as a member of building level RTI teams, grade level teams, and individual problem‑solving teams to contribute to a multidisciplinary approach to pupil management;
  • Participate in research projects pertaining to the learning and adjustment of pupils;
  • Maintain lines of communication with outside agencies that provide child and family services and make appropriate referrals;
  • Provide support, instruction, technical assistance, and ongoing monitoring of progress toward measurable goals for students at individual, group, or systems level;
  • Provide consultation during the data analysis and progress monitoring process for staff and parents;
  • Serve as a consultation leader during the RTI process and provide consultation on legal and ethical concerns that arise in the building during the RTI and special education process;
  • Develop prevention programs consistent with the RTI academic and behavior model;
  • Analyze and evaluate data to implement plans at individual, group, or systems level;
  • Observe, consult, assess, and give feedback on the fidelity of classroom instruction and intervention implementation;
  • Participate in crisis intervention efforts at the building and district level;
  • Keep abreast of new information and developments in school psychology to update knowledge and skills;
  • Implement best practices in school psychology, including active participation in the IEP process;
  • Identify areas in need of additional assessment and data collection;
  • Explain the eligibility process to parents, summarize procedural safeguards and evaluation results;
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Coordinator of Psychological Services or the Special Education Director of Programs and Services.
Qualifications

Must have a valid Illinois Professional Educators License or Emergency Short‑Term Approvals for School Support Personnel.
Endorsement: School Psychologist.
