The special education teacher provides case management and specialized instruction to students eligible for special education services. This includes remediating academic and behavioral delays and consulting with school staff regarding appropriate behavioral/academic interventions for students across settings.
Primary Responsibilities- Plan and instruct students using District approved curriculum as appropriate based on student needs.
- Modify and adapt lessons and curriculum, as needed to meet individual student's needs and IEP goals.
- Provide direct instruction using a variety of techniques, including individualized instruction, team teaching, co‑teaching, hands‑on formats, and other instructional strategies.
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and abilities of students.
- Work collaboratively and regularly with colleagues to ensure individual student's needs are met.
- Actively participate in problem‑solving and intervention teams to facilitate early involvement and resolution to learning or behavioral needs.
- Provide case management of Individualized Educational Program (IEP).
- Demonstrate considerable knowledge of current best practices, laws, including due process and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and interventions regarding the education of special needs students.
- Exhibit considerable knowledge of specific disabilities and familiarity with common children's mental health disorders, as well as specific strategies/interventions to use in the classroom.
- Set and maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior that are consistent with administration policies and develop rules for classroom behavior, which are enforced in a fair and just manner.
- Works cooperatively with other school personnel in the identification, diagnosis, and remediation of individual students with specialized needs.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants.
- Attends IEP meetings, grade level and Special Services meetings, parent meetings, MTSS team meetings, etc., as appropriate.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Building Administration.
