Ten-month assignment: 10-month assignment
General FunctionReporting to the Director of Athletics, the Cheer Team Coach is responsible for the management and administration of all activities related to the Cheer Program and exercises direct supervision of recruiting, training, and coaching student-athletes participating in these activities. The Cheer Team Coach also serves to support spectator and student engagement during athletic contests by designing and implementing programs that incorporate school spirit activation in new or long-standing College events and activities.

As a member of the Jewell Community, the Cheer Team Coach is fully responsible for compliance with policies and procedures, applicable bylaws of the governing body of the sport, compliance with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regulations, as well as Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) rules and all College policies and procedures, serving as the model for appropriate conduct towards officials, spectators, and athletes while being committed to equity and inclusion in all activities.
and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement strategy while managing a Cheer Team scholarship budget in a coordinated effort with the Office of Financial Aid and the Office of Admission to evaluate talent, recruit and retain Cheer Team members to meet roster and performance targets set in collaboration with the Director.
- Develop and manage team operations and budget including coaching/choreography, equipment, travel, meals, uniforms, supplies, and various other training and performance logistics to ensure a consistent, high quality professional Cheer Team member experience and presence at campus events.
- Develop a regular practice/rehearsal schedule to provide both individual and team development for cheer.
- Evaluate students’ skills and review performance at practice or events to determine needs for individual or team improvement and adjust coaching techniques as necessary based on strengths and weaknesses of the team.
- Monitor the use of equipment to ensure safe and proper use and follow established procedures in the event of injury.
- Drive vans to transport the team when appropriate.
- Plan, promote and conduct camps, clinics, and/or lessons to generate awareness of William Jewell College and the Cheer Team program while generating revenue to assist in underwriting Cheer Team activities.
- Organize and conduct spirit activation in collaboration with the Department of Athletics, Cheer Team or Athletic Band, Student Life, Office of Marketing, and the Office of Advancement to ensure students and attendees are engaged and entertained at community, campus, and athletic events. Spirit activation includes designing and implementing fan experiences at athletic contests and campus events, ensuring the College has presence in the community through Cheer Team engagements, and assisting other units with planning to incorporate brand affinity building into events.
Skills and Abilities
- Minimum high school diploma;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Experience as a coach or athlete in a collegiate level Cheer/Dance/Spirit program.
- Ability to work effectively to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, alumni and College staff.
- Organizational skills and ability to clearly explain/teach cheer skills to students.
- Must possess a sufficient knowledge of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques for cheer.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Have, or be willing to obtain, a Missouri Class E Driver’s License.
Normal office environment as well as indoor and outdoor athletics facilities. Some travel required. Evening and weekend work required. Physically able to lift 25 pounds and attend practice and competitive sessions indoors and outdoors.
