Position Title

Patient Care Tech (ICU) – Liberty Hospital

Under the direct supervision of a Nurse, the Patient Care Tech (Inpatient) is cross‑trained in the role of Unit Secretary and Unit Assistant/Nurse Tech. Responsibilities combine direct patient care and technical assistance to the nurse, with a variety of computer, clerical, scheduling and supply functions necessary for unit operation. Excellent communication skills, self‑motivation, limited supervision decision‑making, emergency procedure knowledge and calmness in stressful situations are required.

• Perform all clinical and non‑clinical duties for admission, transfers and discharges, including securing IV pump, zeroing bed and updating white board.
• Assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment: clean equipment, use infection control techniques, report damaged or malfunctioning equipment, change out sharps containers, keep hallways clear and wipe down desk/nurse’s station. Upon discharge, clean white board, strip bed, remove equipment/supplies and properly store them.
• Maintain standards of care when completing and documenting daily duties such as hygiene, vital signs, nutritional assistance and weight/height, ambulation, fingerstick blood sugar and measuring intake and output. Accurately collect, label and transport specimens to the lab as indicated.
• Makes rounds on patients and answer call lights immediately, using excellent customer service techniques. Promptly report any unusual incidents and changes observed in patient condition or behavior to the appropriate staff, maintaining confidentiality.
• Introduce self to patient and family upon arrival to room. Communicate relevant information to nurse and/or shift coordinator in a timely manner (e.g., physician phone calls, stat orders, critical results, patient needs).
• Use technology appropriately, entering data or securing data from the computer system. Accurately enter orders and charges into the computer system as appropriate.
• Manage own time and time of others. Prioritize tasks. Self‑motivated and able to make appropriate decisions regarding patient care.
• Contribute to the plan of care under the direction of the nurse by following patient safety goals of fall risk and skin monitoring. Reinforce selected patient teaching initiated by the nurse.
• Perform professional, clinical and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

• High School Graduate or GED, or currently enrolled in a high school or GED program.
• One of the following: hold a CNA license or have completed the Gold Standard Intern Program; have documentation of fundamentals of nursing courses; have a minimum of 18 months in a relevant patient care role.
