Systems Engineer
The Homeland Sensors and Analytics Group builds technology to counter threats to our critical infrastructure, land and maritime borders, transportation systems, and public places, and to enable US forces to disrupt transnational criminal and terrorist organizations. We focus on the development and fielding of advanced sensors, AI and data analytics, and integrated human-machine decision making to help monitor and characterize these threats.
We specialize in prototyping new sensor technologies as well as collecting and processing a wide range of data types — including radar, video, imagery, text, point cloud, transactional, and body‑worn sensor data — from both commercial and Laboratory‑developed sensors. We often apply advanced machine learning methods to convert raw data into actionable insights about the activities of threat actors, networks, or organizations.
Our ultimate goal is to field solutions that significantly enhance the decision‑making process of analysts and operators who secure the homeland.
The Homeland Sensors and Analytics Group designs, builds, and fields solutions that significantly enhance the tactical decision‑making process of analysts and operators who secure the homeland. This includes security for critical infrastructure, land and maritime borders, transportation systems, and soft targets / crowded places. It also includes support for law enforcement, special operations, and intelligence analysts who track and disrupt transnational criminal and terrorist organizations.
To do this, the group works on a combination of novel sensing technologies and data analytics techniques in order to provide better threat awareness to decision makers. The group designs systems that collect and process a wide range of data types — including radar, visible imagery and video, non‑visible imagery, text, time‑series data, and 3D point clouds — often applying advanced machine learning methods to convert raw data into actionable insights.
The group places an emphasis on taking technology from the concept phase through deployment and transition in order to achieve operational impact.
Our prototyping team is seeking highly motivated engineers who are interested in solving challenging technical problems and help build advanced technologies for high impact missions with DHS and DoD mission sets. This position is to support the design, development, implementation, and testing of prototype systems development including circuit design, printed circuit board schematic and layout, hardware integration, and embedded systems. The candidate will work in a team‑oriented development environment working on fast‑paced development goals.
Candidate should be willing to work on‑site in the office 3 or more days a week, due to the hardware‑focused development, and occasionally in outdoor test environments. Additionally the candidate should be willing to travel up to ~15% of the time to support field tests and visits to sponsor organizations.
Relevant work experience (including internships, co‑ops , …) highly desired. At a minimum, candidates should have a B.S. or B.A. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
RequirementsRequired Skills:
- Prototyping systems experience
- Strong written and oral communication
- Familiarity with electronics (such as microcontrollers)
Strong candidates will have experience in the following:
- Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design, including schematic capture and board layout tools (such as Mentor Graphics or Altium or other)
- Writing software or firmware in one of the following: C, C++, Python, Rust, or Java
- Familiarity with Linux distributions and command‑line interface
- System‑level design, system architecture, or trade studies
Additional experience in one (1) or more of the following is desired, but not required:
- RF engineering (such as radar, antennas, or DSP)
- Low‑level communication protocols (such as SPI, I²C, UART)
- UxS (unmanned systems, such as drones, rovers, etc.) development or testing
- FPGA integration and design experience (Verilog, VHDL, etc.)
- Low‑level drivers and firmware design for use in…
