Overview
R. J. Corman Railroad Company is seeking a Locomotive Shop Manager in Lexington, KY.
Responsibilities- Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in repair and maintenance of railroad locomotives. Reads management and engineering reports of locomotive problems or malfunctions to determine repairs to be made.
- Assigns duties to workers based on worker abilities and nature of required repairs.
- Observes progress of work to ensure adherence to prescribed procedures and adherence to company and governmental standards.
- Directs workers to perform preventive maintenance of locomotive components, such as diesel engine, frame and housing, electrical system, and air brakes.
- Monitors stock of replacement parts to detect shortages of parts needed for future repair and maintenance, and requisitions needed parts.
- Examines shop equipment, such as welding machines and engine simulators, to verify that equipment meets safety and performance standards.
- Notifies specified personnel of shop equipment malfunctions.
- PATROLS work sites to observe methods, to inspect safety equipment, and to ensure compliance with company, union, and governmental regulations.
- Implements and schedules all FRA locomotive operations including shop, terminal, and service.
- Manages locomotive operations including shop, terminal, and service.
- Monitors safety, quality and production performance in shop, terminal and service tracks.
- Tracks and maintains locomotive downtime with written reports.
- Works with the Operations team to develop plans to ensure operational needs are met.
- Routinely audits locomotive reports and inspects equipment on a regular basis to ensure compliance.
- Assists in troubleshooting and repairing locomotives and equipment as needed.
- Coaches and trains mechanical employees on safe and productive work practices.
- Willing to work as necessary to get projects completed.
- Responsible for keeping track of employee time associated with hourly shop budgets.
- Responsible for maintaining shop expense budget along with yearly capital requests.
Education and Experience
- 3-7 years of experience as locomotive, diesel, automotive, or aircraft mechanic, or technical certifications required.
- Mechanical aptitude; ability to understand and apply mechanical principles, make judgments regarding defects for repairs and replacement.
- Knowledge of locomotive components and locomotive diesel engine components required.
- Experience with FRA inspections preferred.
- Knowledge of power and hydraulics.
- Welding and oxygen/acetylene torching.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and federal and state regulations.
- Must have knowledge of hydraulics and federal railroad regulations.
- Must be able to read and understand service and parts manuals.
- Prior shop management experience required.
- Must have a safe driving record.
- Mobility to participate in regular travel among all locations.
- Requires constant standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and balancing in a safe environment.
- Requires frequent stooping, kneeling, and handling of materials.
Performs duties in multiple environments including office, shop and outside settings, in and around moving vehicles and rail equipment. Limited exposure to weather elements; and appropriate PPE required.
