Position SummaryThe Safety Trainer is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive training programs to ensure bus operators and related personnel operate Lextran vehicles safely and in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This role promotes a culture of safety through instruction, retraining, and active participation in safety initiatives.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training for new bus operators, focusing on defensive driving and safety standards.
- Provide refresher training for current operators to maintain compliance and enhance safety.
- Serve as a Certified Driving Instructor and train Part-Time/Bus Operator Trainers to meet Lextran Safety & Training guidelines.
- Chair monthly Safety Council meetings to advocate for a safe work environment and encourage employee engagement.
- Assist the Safety Manager and act as backup when needed; support special training programs (e.g., fare collection, accident prevention).
- Prepare and maintain accident/incident reports, OSHA logs, and regulatory documentation for FTA, NCPTA, and NTD reporting.
- Develop and update training manuals, agendas, and safety bulletins.
- Perform ride checks, including post-accident evaluations, to ensure compliance with Lextran standards.
- Assist with planning and execution of local Bus Rodeo events.
- Education:
Associate’s Degree in Business Administration, Transit Safety Operations, or Highway Safety preferred. - Experience:
Minimum 3 years as a driver training instructor in transit or transportation (bus/trucking) or related field. - Skills & Knowledge:
- Principles of training program development and classroom instruction.
- Defensive driving and safety regulations (local, state, federal).
- Proficiency in MS Word, Outlook;
Excel and PowerPoint preferred.
- Strong communication, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
