Position Overview:
The Community Liaison plays a critical guest-facing and community-facing role within the emergency cold weather shelter. This position focuses on guest engagement, community partnerships, volunteer coordination, and facilitating access to supportive services and meaningful activities. The Community Liaison serves as the primary facilitator of supportive and enrichment services, lead volunteer and donation programs, coordinate onsite religious and community activities, and provide “case-management-lite” assistance to help guests connect with appropriate resources.

At this time, this is a 5-month contract, starting November 2025, with no benefits, with the possibility for contract extension after the 5-month period.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for community groups, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and local partners supporting shelter programming.
- Lead the development, expansion, and maintenance of partnerships that enhance guest access to services such as medical care, employment, veteran support, recovery programs, transportation, and other resources.
- Conduct tours for stakeholders, donors, community members, and partner organizations.
- Represent the shelter in community meetings related to programming, volunteer initiatives, and service expansion.
- Build rapport with guests to identify needs related to health, employment, transportation, mobility, recovery, pregnancy, and other support concerns.
- Provide light case support by helping guests connect to appropriate external services, rather than conducting full case management or tracking long-term goals.
- Examples include: assisting pregnant guests with connecting to clinics or OB/GYN appointments; helping veterans access veteran service groups; connecting employable guests to employment support programs or job fairs.
- Identify guests whose needs may not be well suited to the shelter environment, such as those with mobility challenges, and assist in coordinating alternative resource options.
- Maintain clear and professional boundaries while fostering a welcoming and supportive environment.
- Design, publish, and maintain the weekly schedule of events and activities, including wellness groups, employment workshops, AA meetings, hobby groups, financial literacy sessions, and similar offerings.
- Coordinate with volunteers and partner agencies to deliver programming that promotes stability, engagement, and personal growth.
- Coordinate and schedule religious services with faith-based community partners in a manner that respects guest choice and remains voluntary and non-coercive.
- Track participation and share insights with leadership to support continuous improvement of programming.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and orientation for volunteers supporting programming, donation management, transportation assistance, teaching transit usage, and other guest-facing roles.
- Develop a positive, organized volunteer experience that encourages community engagement in shelter support.
- Match volunteers to appropriate roles based on interest, skill set, and guest needs.
- Ensure volunteers understand and adhere to shelter guidelines, safety expectations, confidentiality standards, and trauma-informed practices.
- Coordinate donation drop-offs, sorting, intake, and distribution.
- Ensure donated items reach guests equitably and based on need.
- Maintain organization and tracking of donated goods such as clothing, hygiene items, blankets, and coats.
- Partner with community organizations to coordinate targeted donation drives such as winter gear collections or hygiene product kits.
- Identify guests facing transportation barriers or mobility limitations and help coordinate solutions through volunteers or partner programs.
- Recruit volunteers or organizations who can assist guests with essential transportation such as medical appointments or job interviews.
- Assist guests in navigating the public transportation system, including supporting bus-pass coordination and transit training.
- Collaborate with shelter operations staff to ensure programming, volunteer schedules, and guest services integrate smoothly with daily operations.
