Herrick Company, Inc. (HCI) is seeking an ambitious and talented Heavy Civil Project Estimator for water and wastewater treatment plant projects. As an experienced and well‑respected contracting firm in the water industry, we’re seeking a strong Estimator who wishes to be integrally involved in the growth of the company within Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and the surrounding areas. The Project Estimator will lead take‑offs, pricing, and bid strategy for complex water and wastewater treatment plants, pumps stations, and service work from $1MM to $50MM.
The Project Estimator will work directly with the company’s ownership and executive leadership in the bidding of water/wastewater treatment projects including self‑perform general contracting, maintenance/repair, expansion, and renovation projects. The Project Estimator should have a strong working knowledge of the bid, build, and administrative requirements of hard‑bid water infrastructure projects as well as the means and methods of self‑perform, heavy civil construction scopes of work including, but not limited to, sitework, excavations, piping installations, cast‑in‑place concrete, treatment plant process equipment installations, along with subcontract and vendor scope evaluations.
- Preform detailed quantity take‑offs using Bluebeam, On‑Screen Takeoff, and/or Roc Tek.
- Build accurate cost estimates for labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and indirect costs.
- Analyze plans, specs, Geotech reports, and permit requirements for water/wastewater projects.
- Lead bid‑day coordination with solicitation team, subs, and suppliers.
- Develop value‑engineering alternatives and change order proposals as may be necessary.
- Present estimates in internal bid reviews and client‑facing meetings.
- Mentor junior staff and maintain historical cost and estimating database.
- 5+ years heavy civil and/or water/wastewater treatment plant project experience.
- Proven success on design‑bid‑build, CMAR, and progressive design‑build deliveries.
- Expert in Pro Est, Timberline, HCSS Heavy Bid, Bid2
WIN, or similar. - Strong communication skills – both verbal and written.
- Strong grasp of means & methods: deep foundations, shoring, dewatering, bypass pumping, ductile iron piping, cast‑in‑place concrete structures, etc.
- Bachelor’s in construction management, Civil Engineering, or equivalent field experience.
- Ability to read/analyze bid specs and drawings, P&IDs, and hydraulic profiles.
- Willing to work in a team‑oriented atmosphere, while being heavily relied upon to assist in and perform complex decision making.
- Must exercise leadership and organization, analytical, oral, and written skills, be results and schedule‑driven and operate under periods of stress.
- Willing to learn new approaches and software while also willing to coach and teach the next generation of construction leaders.
- Capable of efficient use of a computer and standard Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) as well as additional software that may be necessary for management.
