Responsibilities- Snow removal and clearing of the right‑of‑way
- Maintenance of guardrail, fences, signs, and luminaires
- Traffic control and salt brine production
- Availability for emergency weather conditions and work on weekends and holidays
- Work in extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time
- Perform moderate physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and operating heavy equipment
Education and Experience
- One (1) year experience driving a heavy truck or operating construction equipment with knowledge of highway maintenance and equipment operation, basic vehicle maintenance, math, record keeping, and computer skills
- A valid Montana Commercial Operators License (Class A, Type II) with no restrictions, a tank endorsement, and a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC). Applicants with a learner’s permit or a Class B CDL have 30 days to obtain the necessary license
- Must live or be willing to relocate within 45 road miles of Lewistown and be reachable by telephone or other reasonable means of communication
- Season typically begins mid‑November and ends in March, depending on weather
- Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form authorizing the department to obtain permanent driving records and submit to a negative pre‑employment drug screen
- Maintenance Technicians will be regularly selected for drug testing per federal law and state policy

This is a temporary position offering up to six (6) months of employment. Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to a practical‑test and a behavioral‑based interview. Eligible applicants may be considered for placement up to a Maintenance Technician Level III if they have documented experience from a city, county or state highway department.
Benefits and SalarySalary: $28.59 – $29.59 hourly. Benefits include paid leave & holidays and a retirement plan.
