Responsibilities- Provide direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a RN or physician, assisting patients with activities of daily living, personal care, emotional support, and performing more complex clinical skills under RN supervision.
- Perform patient care considering the specific needs of the patient’s age and condition, including adult, geriatric, and general populations.
- Deliver care that meets psychosocial and physical needs within the CNA’s scope of practice.
- Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers.
- Provide assistance to patients for bathroom activities, dressing, changing bed linens, cleaning over‑bed tables and bedside stands, straightening rooms/bays, and other general care throughout the shift.
- Assist with transporting patients to and from the Holding Room/Operating Room and turn over patient bays quickly and efficiently.
- Offer general nursing care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting with bedpan, commode use, and ambulating patients.
- Prepare patients for meals, serve and remove food trays, and assist with meals or feeds if necessary.
- Distribute drinking water and snacks to applicable patients.
- Answer patients’ call lights, anticipate patients’ needs, and make rounds of assigned patients.
- Transport patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
- Demonstrate the ability to perform procedures within the CNA’s scope of practice per state law.
- Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure, and intake/output as requested.
- Report patient complaints of pain to the assigned RN.
- Observe patient mental and physical conditions as appropriate, and report any significant changes to the supervising RN.
- Apply suitable infection control procedures.
- Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces medical/healthcare errors.
- Communicate clearly and concisely with RNs and medical staff.
- Maintain a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Attend in‑service education programs to learn new treatments, procedures, and developmental skills.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stressful situations.
- Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Provide consistent customer service, interacting with all individuals in a supportive and respectful manner.
- Maintain a pleasant and helpful demeanor and present a professional appearance toward all internal and external customers at all times.
- Initiate assistance for individuals who are not direct customers.
- Take appropriate action to recover from service difficulties, ensuring resolution of customer problems.
- Conduct all work activities with respect for coworkers, fostering a calm environment during stressful situations.
- Interact with supervisory personnel professionally and courteously.
- Demontrate a commitment to service through consistent attendance and punctuality; schedule absences per departmental requirements and avoid unplanned absences when possible.
Education and Experience
- High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
- Completion of a CNA course.
- Current CNA certification in the state of Maine.
- Listing on the Maine State Board of Nursing CNA Registry.
