Responsibilities

Position Summary:

  • The CNA provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a RN or physician, assisting patients with activities of daily living, providing personal care, emotional support, and performing more complex clinical skills under RN direction.
  • Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient, including adult, geriatric, and the general patient population.
  • Provides patient care that meets psychosocial and physical needs within CNA's scope of practice.
  • Assists with patient admissions, discharge and transfers.
  • Assists with bathroom, shower, dressing; changing bed linens; cleaning over‑bed table and bedside stand; straightening room/bay as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Assists with transporting patients to and from the Holding Room/Operating Room; turns over patient bay in a quick and efficient manner.
  • Provides general nursing care such as positioning, lifting and turning, applying/utilizing special equipment, and assisting in the use of bedpan, commode, and ambulating patients.
  • Prepares patients for meals; serves and removes food trays; assists with meals or feeds patients if necessary.
  • Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
  • Answers patients' call lights, anticipates needs, and makes rounds of assigned patients.
  • Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform procedures within CNA's scope of practice per state law.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure, and intake/output as requested; reports patient pain complaint to RN.
  • Observes patients' mental and physical conditions and reports any changes to supervising RN.
  • Applies infection control procedures appropriately.
  • Maintains patient safety and reduces likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Communicates clearly and concisely to RNs and medical staff.
  • Maintains good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  • Documents consistently with current standards and policies.
  • Attends continued education programs to learn new treatments, procedures, and developmental skills.
  • Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; demonstrates flexibility, organization, and function under stressful situations.
  • Operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Provides consistent customer service, maintains a pleasant demeanor, and presents a professional appearance toward all internal and external customers.
  • Initiates assistance to individuals who may not be direct customers and follows up to resolve service difficulties.
  • Conducts work with respect for coworkers and fosters calmness during stressful situations.
  • Interacts with supervisory personnel professionally and appropriately.
  • Demonstrates commitment to service through consistent attendance, punctuality, and proper scheduling of absences.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Completion of CNA course.
  • Current CNA certification in the state of Maine.
  • Listing on the Maine State Board of Nursing CNA Registry.
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Engage patients and team members utilizing the CMH Experience Standards.
