Overview
The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) supports VIP’s mission to earn automotive customers for life by delivering a different and better customer experience. The Tech performs diagnosis, repair, and replacement of automotive parts, fluids, tires, and accessories, and complies with VIP safety, loss prevention, and customer service programs, policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
Responsibilities
Ensure workplace safety is Priority #1; follow safety policies, complete safety training, lock out unsafe equipment, and report unsafe conditions to Management.Provide automotive diagnostics, repair, and maintenance services for customers across systems covered by ASE certifications (A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, A3 Manual Drive Train & Axles, A5 Brakes, A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, A7 Heating & Air Conditioning, A8 Engine Performance).Initiate a valid Service Work Order prior to service and display it visibly with the vehicle during service.Complete a Maintenance Process Initiative (MPI) and participate in the 5-for-5 Customer Engagement Process.Ensure Service Work Order and required printouts are completed and returned to the Service Desk with vehicle keys upon completion.Obtain needed parts from the Desk Team and return unused parts after service.Return cores, batteries, and used tires to designated security areas for proper handling.Maintain a minimum productivity standard (minimum 16-week average) as defined for the role.Follow VIP quality service policies to perform work to VIP quality standards.Complete all required training and certifications for the position (see LMS training, safe equipment operation, and state-specific or position-specific certifications).Develop and maintain ASE certifications per position requirements (e.g., Technician: G1, A4, A5; ASE Technician: four A-Series; Master Technician: A1–A8).Train, support, and deliver the 5-for-5 process to educate customers about vehicle conditions; attend meetings and training sessions as needed.Road-test vehicles after service as necessary to ensure safe and satisfactory operating conditions.Secure and lock customer vehicles when returning to the parking lot; install seat/steering wheel covers and floor mats prior to customer vehicle entry.Maintain a clean work area and shop; participate in daily/weekly shop maintenance programs; comply with safety and loss prevention programs.Performs other responsibilities as required, maintains technical capabilities, and supports attendance records and regulatory compliance.Maintain facility and equipment: ensure appearance and condition meet safety, security, and environmental standards; report issues and keep the service department clean throughout business days.Ensure procedural compliance with the service Code of Ethics and all applicable regulations.Performance Measurement
- Maintain minimum 50% productivity (billed hours vs worked hours).

Standard Work Week
- Schedule:
5 days per week, 40 hours. - Attendance:
Arrive before shift start, be ready to perform duties, and work scheduled hours as directed.
Required Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Read, analyze, and interpret technical instructions and regulations; explain vehicle information to customers; diagnose and recommend solutions; interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions; perform required automotive services.
- Education/
Experience:
Minimum one year of related automotive service experience; completion of a two-year college or technical program recommended; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. - Certificates/Licenses: Current, valid driver’s license; ASE Certification as applicable (G1 – Maintenance and light repair recommended; A4 – Suspension & Steering).
The work environment is indoor service department with potential exposure to varying weather, chemicals, noise, and mechanical equipment. Protective eyewear is required in the service area. The description may include standard physical activities and weightlifting requirements, with accommodations as needed.
