Job Description

TITLE: Director of Education (Secondary Emphasis)

QUALIFICATIONS: As established by state certification requirements; such other qualifications of academic, professional, and personal excellence as the Board of Directors may specify. Secondary principal experience preferred.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY TO: Superintendent of Schools

JOB GOAL: To provide leadership, management, and direction in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs K-12 with an emphasis on secondary education; to design and implement staff development programs; and to administer a District-wide testing program.

Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership to ensure understanding of and promote the educational goals of the District.
  • Direct all formal efforts of the professional staff, with an emphasis on 6-12 in projects of curriculum planning, development, implementation, and evaluation for the District.
  • Collaborate and recommend the addition of new courses, grade placement of courses, credit allowance for courses, and graduation requirements at the secondary level.
  • Direct creation of and edits for publication of all curriculum documents and materials prepared by and to be distributed among the instructional staff.
  • Supervise and coordinate curriculum development.
  • Study, evaluate, and, as appropriate, recommend adoption of new instructional materials, methods, and programs, and assist in budget preparation for newly approved instructional programs as related to instructional supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Keep abreast of developments in curriculum, assessment instruction, and furnish leadership in determining their appropriateness for inclusion in the District's educational program.
  • Interpret the curriculum and proposed curriculum changes to the Board, the administration, the staff, and the general public.
  • Direct the work of the Curriculum Review Teams.
  • Manage the scheduling and implementation of a District-wide testing program which includes state-required and District-adopted assessment.
  • Assume responsibility for reviewing and evaluating results of District-wide testing program, and for other evaluation measures used by the schools.
  • Serve as a consultant to school administrators, teachers, and parents to help them understand and use student test results for improved student learning.
  • Write and disseminate reports which analyze test data.
  • Assume a leadership role in developing curriculum for any course newly mandated by the state legislature, state school board, or the Board of Directors.
  • Design and lead district-wide professional learning programs, including orientation for new teachers and ongoing training for veteran staff.
  • Supervise and evaluate curriculum personnel.
  • Work with principals and teacher committees in organizing and coordinating grade level and departmental meetings, in order to effect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program throughout the District.
  • Collaborate, and guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of in-service training programs, including new teacher orientation for professional personnel.
  • Manage federal programs including budgetary responsibilities (Title IIA, etc.) and ensure the district remains in compliance with state and federal regulations for related grants and funds.
  • Observe teachers in their classrooms upon request of school administrators, and offer insights for the enhancement of the teaching‑learning situation.
  • Maintain liaison and active participation with educational leaders in the State Department of Education, University Consortium, College Advisory Council, and the work of the national curriculum association.
  • Supervise and coordinate literacy planning and summer reading programs, scholarships, leadership cohorts and intern and practicum placements.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be necessary or assigned by the Superintendent.
Terms of Employment

The employment period shall be twelve (12) months with twenty (20) days vacation. The salary shall be commensurate with the employee's appropriate place on the approved administrative salary schedule or as determined by the Board of Directors.

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated periodically by the Superintendent of Schools.
