Position Overview“Work outdoors on horseback, care for cattle, and be part of a supportive team that puts people and animals first.”
The Feedlot Pen Checker is responsible for monitoring the health and welfare of cattle within the feedlot pens, ensuring proper feed and water access, and maintaining a safe and efficient environment for both animals and staff. This role requires strong horsemanship skills and experience handling livestock.
Key ResponsibilitiesAnimal Health Monitoring
– Patrol pens on horseback to identify sick, injured, or distressed cattle and report findings to supervisors.
Treatment Support
– Assist with sorting and removing cattle for treatment in collaboration with veterinary staff.
Feed & Water Management
– Ensure cattle have proper access to quality feed and clean water; report any issues promptly.
Pen & Facility Maintenance
– Check pens for hazards, damaged fencing, or maintenance needs and report accordingly.
Record Keeping
– Accurately document inspections, treatments, and animal health data.
Horse Care & Equipment
– Care for your own horse, ensuring it is trained and suited for feedlot work; maintain proper tack and riding gear.
Team Collaboration
– Work closely with fellow riders, supervisors, and feedlot staff to ensure animal well‑being and operational efficiency.
Minimum 2 years of pen riding or livestock handling experience.
Strong horsemanship skills and experience working on horseback in a feedlot environment.
Ability to identify cattle health concerns and handle animals safely and calmly.
Valid driver’s license.
Team‑oriented attitude, strong communication skills, and reliability.
Experience operating feedlot equipment (loader, skid steer, etc.).
Knowledge of cattle diseases and treatment protocols.
