Why We’re More Than Trailers!
Founded 45 years ago, Southland Trailers has grown from a small operation into one of Canada’s largest trailer manufacturers, with over 560 team members. Our approach is simple: people first, processes second, products third—a philosophy that drives everything we do and forms the foundation of our success.
At Southland Trailers, we are committed to hard work, open communication, a positive attitude, calculated risk‑taking, continuous improvement, and leading with humility and respect for every individual. These values set us apart from the competition and enable us to build trailers that meet the evolving needs of our customers.
With a focus on LEAN manufacturing and cutting‑edge technology, we consistently deliver high‑quality, reliable trailers. Our collaborative, close‑knit environment empowers our team members to innovate, problem‑solve, and continuously improve.
If you’re looking for a place where you can make a real impact and grow with a company that truly values its people, Southland Trailers is the place for you.
About the Role
Southland Trailers is hiring a Manufacturing Automation Engineer to design and develop custom automated equipment and machinery to support our production operations.
This role is hands‑on and cross‑functional. You will design custom machines from concept through commissioning, create detailed drawings for fabrication, and develop PLC ladder logic to control automated systems. You’ll work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable, and production‑ready automation solutions.
What You'll Do:
Design and develop custom automated manufacturing equipment and machinery
Create and maintain 3D models and assemblies using Solid Works (preferred)
Produce 2D drawings, including flat patterns for laser cutting, forming, and fabrication
Develop, program, and debug ladder logic (PLC) for custom automation systems
Integrate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems into machine designs
Support machine commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement efforts
Work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to optimize automation solutions
Create and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, schematics, and control logic documentation
Ensure designs comply with safety standards, manufacturing best practices, and company standards
What We're Looking For:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a 2‑year Engineering Diploma with extensive, relevant work experience
P.Eng/C.E.T. designation preferred, or actively working toward obtaining it
4–8 years of experience in manufacturing automation, machine design, or related engineering roles
Experience designing and supporting custom automated machinery
Proficiency in PLC ladder logic programming for industrial or custom‑built equipment
Hands‑on, practical mindset with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and control system issues
Positive, proactive attitude toward continuous improvement and upgrading manufacturing systems
Strong interest in modern automation technologies and willingness to learn and apply new tools
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross‑functional teams
Comfortable spending time on the shop floor during builds, testing, and commissioning
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Safety‑focused approach to machine design and automation implementation
