Responsibilities
  • Maintains an orderly, clean, aseptic environment for the operating room and assists staff by performing a variety of tasks and functions that support the care of surgical patients.
  • Performs technical duties that assist the anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetists in preparation for providing anesthesia services.
  • Prepares OR case cart set-up with surgical instruments, power equipment, implant systems and other supplies using physician preference cards; stages case carts and verifies completeness with the OR charge nurse.
  • Acts as the frontline liaison between the OR, Anesthesia staff, Materials Management and Central Sterile staff; anticipates and resolves instrument and supply related problems.
  • Exercises judgment in determining which problems should be referred to the charge nurse, perioperative operations coordinator, or manager; reports and removes malfunctioning equipment and communicates with the charge nurse and coordinator.
  • Familiar with locations of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation in core and specialty carts; ensures items are returned after use.
  • Reviews surgery schedule and coordinates reprocessing of surgical instrument trays and items needed for efficient turnover between cases.
  • Provides additional instruments, sutures, equipment, and supplies to the OR as needed during procedures.
  • Assists with restocking, maintaining, and replacement of OR and anesthesia supplies and surgical instruments daily to ensure availability during procedures.
  • Ensures OR room turnover occurs directly following the procedure and is completed within 15 minutes according to policy/procedure guidelines.
  • Monitors, tests, and documents OR and anesthesia equipment as required by policy.
  • Adheres to infection control principles in all aspects of room cleaning, turnover, and decontamination of surgical instruments.
  • Decontaminates, assembles, and packages instruments following established protocols.
  • Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments, anesthesia and reusable equipment as needed, applying sterile technique.
  • Responds calmly to critical and emergency situations following directions from the charge nurse or designee.
  • Assists with patient positioning and transfers bed/stretcher to OR table.
  • Initiates and maintains documentation and input into medical records, physician orders, transcription, and departmental logs in a timely manner.
  • Position Qualifications

    License/Certification/Education

    Required:

    1. High School diploma or equivalent.

    Preferred:
    1. Successful completion of an accredited instrument technician program.
    2. Instrument Technologist or Specialist Certification.

    1. Knowledge of medical terminology.
    2. Knowledge of surgical equipment, instrumentation function, patient-related supplies, and materials.
    3. Thorough knowledge of aseptic and sterilization techniques.
    4. Mechanical aptitude to disassemble, clean, reassemble, and troubleshoot incomplete or missing instrumentation.
    5. Knowledge of computers and ability to learn software applications.
