Responsibilities
Under the direction of the RN circulator as dictated by the standards in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for surgical services, assist surgical teams during operative procedures in scrubbing for all physicians in assigned services. Arrange and inventory sterile setup for operations. Assist in preparing, moving and positioning patients. Perform sterile scrub procedures and related activities such as preparation and draping the patient and operative area.Pass instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies in accordance with hospital policy and procedure. Participate in the turnover of operating rooms.Demonstrate independent functioning and proficiency in the scrub role in all cases in assigned specialty on an ongoing basis. Scrub for all physicians in assigned service area, providing high quality evidenced-based clinical care with minimal supervision. Promote teamwork within the team by formally precepting co-workers.Prepare the Operating Room for cases. Select and check case carts and preference cards for correct instrument pans, packs, sterile supplies and additional items needed for the case.Anticipate the need for special equipment and supplies before procedures and request them from the circulating nurse. Set up back table and Mayo tray with instruments and supplies according to the procedure and surgeon preference card. Perform surgical counts with the circulating nurse according to the hospital's count policy.Respond to the needs of the surgeon and other team members. Assist the operative team and anticipate the needs of the surgeon and/or assistants during cases, including the need for special equipment and supplies. Remain observant of the operative field and recognize emergency situations; perform emergency procedures as directed. Utilize a variety of OR equipment (e.g., microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, compressed air/gas).Pass and track instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures. Label all medications and solutions on the sterile field. Monitor sponges, needles and instruments throughout the case. Care for specimens to prevent loss or damage. Ensure proper anatomical identification when handling specimens.Assist in completing procedures. Participate in closing counts at appropriate times; sponge and needle counts at change of shift according to count policy. Assist with the application of dressings and/or casts. Assist with transferring patients from OR tables to stretchers/beds when appropriate.Prepare the operating room and supplies for subsequent cases. Communicate with others to facilitate timely turnover of operating rooms. Ensure sharps from the back table are disposed of properly in biohazard sharps receptacles. Participate in cleaning, decontamination and sterilization of instruments and equipment. Turn over back tables and gather appropriate supplies for subsequent cases.Participate in the maintenance and rotation of stock for the department. Maintain cleanliness of the department.Serve as a preceptor to new staff in the specified clinical area; mentor students and staff as requested.Follow the Code of Ethics of the UMMHC Operating Room and contribute to maintaining a positive work environment for patients, families, visitors, co-workers, medical staff and customers.Position Qualifications
