Position Summary

Practice Manager – Retail Sector

The Practice Manager supervises production staff executing the work of the practice, assigning project responsibilities, managing performance, guiding employee development, and fostering positive engagement. The manager informs employment needs, maintains production systems and standards, and contributes to strong client relationships and development opportunities. This highly matrixed role may include accountabilities to all members of the Sector Leadership team and is a full‑time position based on practice needs.

Responsibilities

& Duties
  • Operations
    • Assist the Practice Director in aligning resources with projects to maximize labor efficiency and prioritize client expectations.
    • Provide feedback to the Practice Director and Sector Operations Director regarding staffing and client needs to inform hiring decisions and improvement efforts.
    • Serve as hiring manager for the practice, leading interviews for production staff and project managers.
    • Supervise production staff in project execution and client service to ensure consistency in service delivery across projects.
    • Manage employee performance and operational needs, including evaluations, development, discipline and timesheets.
    • Other duties as assigned.
  • Employee Engagement & Teamwork
    • Practice effective employee relations and personnel management within the practice.
    • Team with technical managers to align training, development, and mentoring of talent.
    • Communicate opportunities and gaps in employee development to practice and sector leadership.
    • Collaborate with organizational, sector, practice, and/or office leadership to foster an engaged, dynamic employee culture and lead company‑wide events and initiatives.
  • Client Experience
    • Manage client relationships, especially within the geographic region, as requested by the Practice Director.
    • Serve as a strategic client contact within the local region for assigned practice or other practices building a new regional presence.
    • Maintain knowledge and presence within the industry to contribute to project pursuits.
    • Assist the Practice Director and marketing staff in generating proposals and determining a profitable fee structure that aligns with the practice strategy.
  • Project Management
    • Ensure that production of drawings, specifications, reports and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements, and practice trends.
    • Act as Project Manager for critical clients and projects within the practice, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, science, technology, marketing, or business (preferred).
  • Eight (8) or greater years of relevant experience, with a minimum of two (2) years in personnel or project management experience.
  • Proven track record in growing and developing client‑focused engineering teams, and ability to motivate, direct and coach staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Excellent motivation, team‑leading and personnel management skills, with proven ability to achieve goals.
  • Broad proficiency in engineering design fundamentals and advanced knowledge of the A &E industry, codes, design guides and standards.
