Community Standards Officer I or II
Location:
City of Lenexa, Lenexa, KS. This role works 40 hours per week as part of the Community Development team.
The Community Standards Officer enforces City codes including property maintenance, rental licensing, massage establishments, and other compliance matters. Work is performed primarily in residential neighborhoods, apartment complexes, and commercial areas in response to complaints and proactive enforcement.
Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities- Conduct daily field inspections to investigate complaints and perform proactive inspections.
- Track inspection details, photos, conversations, and related data through the provided software.
- Complete exterior rental inspections of single-family and multi-family properties.
- Handle incoming phone calls, emails, and service requests related to community standards.
- Work basic code cases through prosecution in partnership with the Legal Department when necessary.
- Issue abatement work orders when necessary and complete required follow-up inspections.
- Perform massage establishment inspections in accordance with City code.
- Drive City and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.
- For Community Standards Officer II, cross-divisional enforcement cases (building, zoning, fire code violations) and may train Officer I.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 2 years of code enforcement or related public contact experience for Officer I; 4 years for Officer II.
- Experience with municipal court setting desired; required for Officer II.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Experience in residential construction knowledge preferred.
- Strong communication and dispute resolution skills.
- Community Standards Officer I: $25.13 – $29.14 per hour.
- Community Standards Officer II: $27.29 – $31.64 per hour.
