Job Summary

Aircraft Mechanics I (Structures) are required to maintain and service F/A-18 airframe and hydraulic systems/components in accordance with applicable publications and governing instructions. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Repair, replace, and rebuild aircraft structures of moderate difficulty (wings, fuselage, surface controls and functional components), including rigging, plumbing and hydraulic units, using hand tools, power tools, machines and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, rivet guns and drills.
  • Apply technical knowledge of airframe system principles to determine equipment malfunctions; restore equipment operation; evaluate performance and reliability of prototype or production mods; recommend changes to installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance.
  • Read and interpret manufacturers' and airline maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, maintenance requirement cards, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repair or replacement.
  • Be qualified on and work with ground support equipment, special calibration equipment, and special tools.
  • Inspect airframe components for fluid leaks, cracks and other damage.
  • Troubleshoot, remove, replace, and repair aircraft structural and hydraulic system components.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties to service aircraft and prioritize workload to meet schedules and standards.
  • Supervise jacking and towing of aircraft; document maintenance in records; verify work was completed satisfactorily; service engines and airframe components at line station; specialize in structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies; and specialize in engine repair.
  • Operate as a general Aircraft Mechanic I on systems beyond the primary field of expertise as required; follow direction of higher graded workers.
Qualifications and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3 years of o-level aircraft system maintenance experience.
  • Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required to perform maintenance tasks.
  • May be required to be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration; military ratings may substitute.
  • May specialize in sheet-metal, electric work, avionics or other related disciplines.
  • 18 months as a Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI), Quality Insurance Inspector, or Inspector Authorization (IA) preferred.
  • Minimum 36 months organization-level experience; preference for 24 months F/A-18 experience within last 36 months.
  • Must complete CDI qualification syllabus and obtain CDI within 90 days of employment.
  • Understanding of DOD aircraft maintenance processes preferred.
  • Must obtain any additional qualifications or licenses required to maintain aircraft.
  • May qualify in additional certifications such as LPT, HPT, CDQAR, and/or Plane Captain.
  • Ability to inspect and maintain assets and PPE in accordance with directives; ensure safe and efficient asset use.
  • Must speak, read, write, and understand English.
  • Must obtain/maintain security clearance, DOD CAC privileges, and Special Access Badge requirements.
  • Willingness to work days, nights, and weekends as required.
  • Current valid U.S. Driver's License and ability to travel.
  • Participate in training and qualification of new personnel; document daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual training.
  • Maintain professional interaction with customers and company employees.
  • Working knowledge of aircraft technical orders, publications, diagrams, drawings, charts, and other technical data.
  • Working knowledge of flight line operations, aircraft/vehicle movement and safety hazards.
Working Conditions

Environment ranges from office to hangar and flight line with extensive climbing, standing, stooping, bending, pushing, kneeling, stretching and walking. Must be physically able to lift up to 50 lbs.
