Senior Backend Developer (C#, Python, AWS, MySQL)

Earth Sense is growing, and we’re looking for a Senior Backend Developer to join our digital Scrum team. This is a hands‑on senior role focused on building and running the backend services, APIs, data pipelines, and storage that power our customer‑facing products and integrations.
As a core member of a small engineering organisation, you’ll help shape technical direction, improve architecture, and raise engineering standards across delivery, reliability, and security.

Earth Sense is revolutionising air pollution management. We combine sensor networks, modelling, and advanced analytics to close data gaps and provide trusted environmental intelligence. Our work empowers governments, researchers, and businesses to tackle poor air quality with clarity and confidence.
Since inception, we’ve achieved year‑on‑year growth through three core product lines:
- Zephyr – Our cost‑effective, innovative air quality monitoring device.
- Mapp Air – A high‑resolution global model of air quality trends.
- My Air – Our web‑based platform providing actionable environmental insights.
As we continue to expand globally, we are strengthening our scientific and technical foundations to ensure that Earth Sense remains at the forefront of trusted air quality data.
What you’ll do- Design, build, and maintain backend services in C# and Python
- Develop and support RESTful APIs for web applications and external customers
- Design and evolve MySQL data models, storage, and data pipeline workflows in AWS
- Contribute to architecture decisions, system design, and technical reviews
- Improve CI/CD pipelines, deployment repeatability, and release quality
- Strengthen observability with monitoring, logging, alerting, and dashboards
- Support production systems, including troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis
- Resolve performance, scalability, reliability, and security bottlenecks
- Mentor engineers and lead high‑quality code reviews
- 5‑8+ years in backend development
- Strong C# and/or Python skills, with willingness to work across both
- Experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs
- Experience in AWS‑based environments
- Experience supporting live production systems and releases
- Strong testing practices and code quality ownership
- Working knowledge of secure engineering (including OWASP principles)
- Backend architecture and system design leadership
- CI/CD and deployment automation improvements
- Monitoring and observability implementation
- Automated testing and static analysis improvements
- API/application security hardening
- Ability to support frontend initiatives when needed
- Starting salary up to £50k
, based on experience, with bonus potential (up to 45% of base salary, yearly). - 25 days paid leave
