The University Hospitals of Leicester are recruiting full‑time Healthcare Security officers to join the busy team based at the University Hospitals of Leicester.

We are seeking security officers with a caring nature, capable of managing altered behaviours and de‑escalating agitated individuals.

The hours of work are 12‑hour shift patterns, covering days and nights across the three sites:
Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital. Full training will be provided.

The post holder will be part of a 10‑person team at the LRI and a 3‑person team at the GGH & LGH, providing 24‑hour security cover, a high‑profile visible service, and effective protection to patients, visitors and staff. The service protects University Hospitals of Leicester property against theft, vandalism and secures all buildings within the site.

Key Responsibilities
  • Record all security incidents and complete all appropriate documentation by means of computer and/or written paperwork.
  • Ensure consistently high standards of customer service within the security service.
  • Respond to challenging/traumatic security incidents and provide a first‑line quick and immediate response to distressed, violent and aggressive persons, including mental health patients.
  • Monitor CCTV in compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and UHL policy.
  • Maintain a visible presence throughout all areas of the hospital to deliver a polite, efficient and compassionate service.
  • Arm and disarm intruder alarms, monitor and report critical and medical alarms and alert relevant staff to emergency situations, and take a leading role in fire alarm procedures.
  • Communicate with patients, visitors and staff, passing routine information (e.g., giving directions) and receiving instructions.
  • Deal directly with individuals disclosing complex, sensitive and contentious information, using empathy and persuasive skills to achieve a positive outcome.
  • Assist with the detainment of patients against their will in accordance with clinical guidance and legal requirements.
  • Use physical intervention skills where necessary, adapting quickly to circumstances and deciding between enforcement and empathy.
Person Specification Training & Qualifications
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Good reading and writing skills, overall standard of education
  • Understanding of Health and Safety
  • Valid UK manual driving licence
  • SIA licence (Security Industry Standard) or equivalent formal training
Experience
  • Knowledge of NHS services
  • Experience working within a team
