Band 5 Staff Nurse – Neonatal Services
We are looking for a caring and enthusiastic Nurse to join our Neonatal Services team at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary has capacity for 30 beds, whereas Leicester General Hospital’s Neonatal Unit has a capacity of 12 beds and is a special care unit.
You will deliver high quality, family‑centered care to premature and unwell newborns, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective care. This role is suitable for newly qualified nurses and experienced Band 5 nurses.
Training will be provided, including preceptorship, foundation of neonatal nursing, ITU and HDU modules and further development opportunities.
Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate evidence‑based nursing care programmes for a group of patients.
- Assist and contribute to the management and organisation of a ward or clinical area.
- Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
- Actively participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members.
- Act as a clinical and professional role model, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement.
- Work collaboratively and co‑operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.
- Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources.
- Assist the accountable budget holder for the neonatal unit to undertake cost containment strategies.
- Bring to the attention of the budget holder any concerns, ideas or creative solutions relevant to effective use and management of ward resources.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times and that information is used only for authorised duties.
- Use health‑related information only for its intended purpose and in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
- Communicate effectively with matrons, clinical teams, medical and AHP staff, education teams and CMG management teams.
- Share best practice in the clinical area and outside of the CMG.
- Work clinically and effectively with midwives to deliver education, training and ensure development is linked to their Key Strategic Focus Appraisal/PD principles and service needs.

- Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing healthcare needs.
- Take responsibility for the care needs of individuals and groups of patients.
- Collect, collate and fully accurately report patient information, maintaining accurate, complete and contemporaneous nursing records.
- Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of family‑centred care.
- Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure needs are met in relation to care input, providing support for ongoing care needs and safe discharge.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives.
- Recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
- Ensure delivery of care to own patients and for all patients when in charge meets the standards determined by the Ward/Unit Manager and the Standards for Better Health.
- Adhere to Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and ensure compliance of others.
- Promote and practise the highest standards of prevention and control of infection at all times.
- Continually monitor standards of nursing care and contribute to improvement of care, through benchmarking, audit and research.
