Position: Maintenance Technician Shift (Electrical) | University Hospitals NHS Trust

Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for dynamic and innovative Maintenance Shift Technicians with Electrical or Mechanical background to join University Hospitals of Leicester.

The core duty of the role is to carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks to a high standard that is commensurate with the skills and experience for the role, to ensure the efficient and effective operation and maintenance of environmental engineering plant, equipment and other engineering systems including heating, air conditioning, fire alarms and specialist healthcare equipment; diagnosis and repair of faults including mechanical and electrical devices and control systems.

Provide a comprehensive Healthcare engineering maintenance service to all wards and departments within a multidisciplinary environment, ensuring compliance with Trust safety standards and procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance tasks to a high standard for environmental engineering systems and equipment including heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, various voltage systems, steam raising plant and associated equipment, medical gas systems, nurse call systems, fire detection, building services controls, standby generators, and specialist healthcare equipment.
  • Act on own initiative in a leadership role, supporting the Estates Supervisor and Maintenance Managers in the day-to-day management of the service and assisting with the management of contractors.
  • Be part of a rotating shift pattern (4 on 4 off) and provide emergency out-of-hours on-call support.
  • Maintain good communications and working relationships with Trust staff at all levels, Estates Supervisors, Estates Managers, Estates and Facilities staff across disciplines, external agencies, and emergency services.
  • Adhere to current legislation, codes of practice and best practice guidance; work safely following Trust Health and Safety Policies and procedures.
  • Utilise technology to work within Service Level Agreements and Key Performance Indicators; contribute to CAFM system records and plant histories.
  • Respond to switchboard and building management system alarms (e.g., fire alarms, medical gas alarms, boiler alarms) and perform first-line fault diagnosis and monitoring using BMS and related systems.
  • Carry out surveys for future maintenance, alterations or improvements; prepare technical reports.
  • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and day-to-day duties involving maintenance of plant, equipment and installations, including boilers, water testing, electrical systems, and fire alarm systems.
  • Assist with the supervision and organisation of Estates work in a hospital environment, including allocation of resources; autonomously allocate PPM and reactive work requests via the Trust Facilities Management System.
  • Communicate effectively with wards and departments regarding Estates issues to ensure service standards are maintained and users are informed of works affecting their areas.
  • Utilise electronic devices and Building Management System data for fault diagnosis, performance monitoring and maintenance; provide first-line diagnostics and data analysis.
  • Participate in appropriate on-call/shift rotas as required by line management.
  • Undertake other duties as reasonably required commensurate with the grade of the post.
Qualifications/Experience
  • Electrical or Mechanical background with relevant experience in healthcare or building services environments.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, drawings and specifications in electrical or mechanical installations, plant and equipment.
  • Experience of fault diagnosis on mechanical and electrical systems and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements and guidelines applicable to operational services.
  • Experience with CAFM/Facilities Management systems is desirable.
Working Arrangements and Additional Information
  • On a rotating shift pattern (4 on 4 off) with on-call duties as required.
  • Support from Estates Supervisors and Maintenance Managers; liaise with area users to coordinate shutdowns of critical patient support systems.
  • On-call/shift rotas and emergency response responsibilities may require working hours beyond standard patterns.
