The Apprentice will provide a high‑quality reception and support service within the Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre, based at Glenfield Hospital. The role requires excellent communication with patients, relatives, the public and a wide range of multi‑professional staff. A versatile approach and the ability to cope with several tasks simultaneously are essential.
Responsibilities include ensuring the correct and timely input of patient information onto departmental computer systems, following Trust policies on data collection and confidentiality, and maintaining a professional, helpful, and friendly manner as the first point of contact for all visitors.
The apprenticeship is a fixed‑term 14‑month post, offering support for learning and career progression. The hourly rate is £7.55–£12.21, rising to £8.00 from 01 April 2026.
Main duties of the job- To undertake and complete a development programme leading to a National Standard/Framework within agreed timescales.
- To actively participate in personal development plans with line manager and training provider.
- To provide support to all staff and visitors to the Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre.
- To give up‑to‑date information and advice to patients, colleagues, other departments, external organisations and the general public where necessary.
- Under supervision, to undertake reception duties, prioritising and arranging appointments using various appointment systems.
- To deal with patients and staff enquiries in person or by telephone in a courteous and confidential manner, providing assistance as required.
- To ensure patient safety and well‑being in the waiting area and alert appropriate staff to any concerns.

- To obtain and prepare notes in readiness for clinics, investigations or at the request of staff within the Department.
- To maintain a record of the transfer of notes to and from the Department using the appropriate UHL systems.
- To liaise with secretaries and other departments within the Trust, and external stakeholders as necessary and to develop a good working knowledge of the service.
- To provide information and/or advice where appropriate or refer onto other staff members where necessary.
- To arrange hospital transport for patients attending the department in accordance with Trust policy.
- Ensure accurate record keeping and updating of information and systems as appropriate within the scope of the position [includes paper and electronic records].
- To ensure that confidentiality for both patients and staff is always maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
- To organise collection and delivery of internal and external post daily and its distribution to staff within the department.
- Update noticeboards, NIHR Leicester BRC Respiratory contact list and circulate emails.
Any other duties as appropriate and determined by the Line Manager.
