Overview

Applications are invited for an Otology & Balance Fellow at ST8 Level in ENT Surgery based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced consultants, led by Professor Peter Rea, enhancing their surgical skills to a level that will enable independent practice as a consultant in this area of ENT surgery. The appointment is 12 months.

• Organise rotas and undertake minor managerial roles as required
• Contribute to teaching and training activities within the team
• Assist with research projects and participate in ongoing major research initiatives
• Support the Otology team in all aspects of middle ear surgery and related procedures
• Engage with the Leicester Balance Centre activities and patient management, including exposure to mastoidectomy, cholesteatoma, CSOM, and BAHA programmes
• Learn and participate in ossicular and stapes surgeries and other middle/external ear procedures
• Contribute to the care of adult and paediatric patients within the Balance Centre
• Maintain high standards of patient care with compassionate and inclusive leadership

• MBBS or equivalent
• Full GMC registration with licence to practice
• Postgraduate
• FRCS (ORL-HNS) or equivalent
• Five years as a Type 1 (NTN/VTN) Specialist Registrar in ENT or equivalent
• Competent to work without direct supervision
• Shows awareness of own limitations
• Evidence of a commitment to a special interest in otology
• Punctuality
• Good communication skills
• Evidence of completed audit
• Willingness to do research and evidence of provisional research; peer reviewed journal publications
• Prepared to learn and take on minor managerial roles (e.g. organisation of rotas)
• Evidence of a keen interest in teaching & training
• Satisfactory health clearance
• Satisfactory enhanced Criminal Records Bureau clearance

The Otology team performs all aspects of middle ear surgery and runs the Leicester Balance Centre, with a busy mastoidectomy practice for cholesteatoma and CSOM and exposure to traditional and endoscopic techniques. There are dedicated adult and paediatric BAHA programmes. There are opportunities to undertake ossicular and stapes surgeries, as well as most middle and external ear procedures. The Balance Centre in Leicester hosts around 7,000 appointments per year and supports advanced assessment and management.

Leicester is one of only four dedicated PCD units in England.

This post is designed as a post-CCT position, but those nearing completion of their specialist training programme or equivalent will be considered. Please note this period may not be accredited for training by the Royal College of Surgeons.

The appointment will be at the grade of ST8 for both daily clinical work and on-call duties. The Department serves the entire Leicestershire area with several sub-specialty interests represented and close links to the Leicester University Medical School.
