Position: Preceptorship or 8a role in Medical Psychology

Preceptorship or 8a role in Medical Psychology

This is an exciting opportunity to take on an 8a role or a band 7 preceptorship, offering some generic work within medical psychology, work within the pain team and a session a week working with the severe asthma team. The role will allow the candidate to gain both generic and specialist skills within medical psychology, with the work ranging from complex assessments, interventions to consultation and close MDT working.

We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated clinical psychologists to join our well-established Department of Medical Psychology. The department is friendly, supportive, and flexible. The team includes clinical and counselling psychologists, trainees, assistants, and excellent admin/clerical support. We place great emphasis on supervision and personal development, which is possible through working within a psychology department. We meet regularly for case presentations, clinical governance, and business meetings.

We also have a monthly peer group meeting and regular time-out to enable reflection and service development.

We have a team base at Leicester General Hospital, although also work at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield Hospital. Leicester is a thriving multi‑cultural city with good arts and sporting facilities that enjoys excellent motorway links to other major cities and easy access to the surrounding countryside.

Main duties of the job

In the General Medical role there is the opportunity to work with a team of psychologists offering complex assessments, one‑to‑one intervention and groups to patients referred by multiple teams within UHL (including diabetes, cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology and neurology).

The team is also developing ways to support staff within UHL to offer level 2 psychological support for patients, which the successful applicant can become involved with. There is also the opportunity to support the pain team.

This team offers input to the UHL pain management programme, assessments of individual patients and some one‑to‑one work, as well as a group to support patients in coping with pain. With high demand in this area the team is working to find creative ways to support patients and so there will also be new developments in this area. The asthma role involves working with the medical MDT to support patients with severe asthma.

This includes attending and MDT meetings, sign‑posting patients to appropriate services, as well as offering assessments and interventions.

As a relatively new service there is also scope for service development in the future, exploring how to support the medical team to understand the psychological needs of their patients.
