Our client brings almost half a century of expertise in the design, development and manufacture of bespoke automation and robotic systems and is a leading automation system solution provider in the UK. They are seeking an experienced Lead / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to complement their established team and deliver innovative special purpose automation machinery projects.
Based near Leicester, the role involves both designing and overseeing a range of special purpose machine projects from order acceptance to customer handover. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, detailing and successful delivery of multiple projects, communicating effectively with customers, suppliers and team members, and working as part of a team focused on on-time, within-budget delivery.
Responsibilities- Perform mechanical design and detailing for multiple projects using 3D CAD within the project plan timeline; arrange Design Reviews to ensure requirements are met, designs are structured for assembly, robust and reliable operation, and budget constraints are respected.
- Obtain a Design Pass Off by the customer on time and ensure BOMs are produced on time and within budget; negotiate with external suppliers to obtain cost-efficient materials aligned with project budgets and timing plans.
- Assist the electrical design process by communicating clearly throughout the project, compile a build folder, and relay build details to machine tool fitters to enable an efficient build process.
- Provide direction and support to fitters, electricians and other engineers; undertake visits to customer sites to understand requirements and capture measurements for dimensions, drawings, site layouts and other considerations; document and communicate requirements to customers and internal staff.
- Assess and improve design concepts with the team at sales quotation stage to reduce risks, costs and lead times; identify key risks and assist in planning trials to mitigate them.
- Obtain parts, samples and drawings in advance to ensure they can be checked and used during the design phase; review the design work of other designers for accuracy; conduct periodic project reviews with customers and maintain a comprehensive Technical Construction File (TCF) including manuals, risk assessments, mechanical parts list and drawings.
- Carry out machine risk assessments during the design phase to ensure Machinery Directive compliance; lead projects through development and installation phases with proactive and timely delivery of fixes while adhering to HSE rules and safety policies.
- Experience as Lead / Senior Mechanical Design Engineer or equivalent; strong 3D CAD skills; ability to design, detail and deliver multiple projects with effective communication to customers, suppliers and internal teams.
- Proven ability to manage BOMs, procurement with cost-conscious supplier negotiations, and collaboration with electrical design and build teams; experience with risk assessment and Machinery Directive compliance.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites as appropriate.
