As our Assistant Buyer, you will support the Buyer to negotiate with suppliers, scheduling and requisitioning site materials on a daily basis to support the wider Commercial team.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a similar role elsewhere, ideally within the Construction/House building sector
  • A proficient use of Microsoft Excel, alongside other Microsoft Office software, would be highly desirable
  • A high level of mathematical ability and problem‑solving skills, with a methodical and logical approach to your work
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, coupled with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a wider team supporting colleagues where required
  • You will be resourceful and keen to learn in order to take on new responsibilities
Desirable
  • Minimum of GCSE Maths and English
  • Working towards a professional procurement qualification e.g. CIPS
  • Previous experience working with timber frame would be desirable but is not essential
Responsibilities
  • Support the wider Buying team with placing material orders, including negotiating prices for materials and checking schedules against drawings and specifications.
  • Analyse variation orders and provide material costs to the Surveying team for variations and any extras, placing and amending orders in accordance with variations.
  • Work alongside the wider Buying team to place orders for plant equipment as required by site, including negotiating prices by liaising with the Construction Director for the compound layout/site set‑up.
  • Check invoices against orders queried by the Accounts department and arrange for credits to be issued where necessary.
  • Maintain administrative databases for the Buying team, dealing primarily with site requisitions on a daily basis and managing the site requisition email, ensuring requests are processed efficiently.
  • Assist our Customer Service team with material requirements for client resolutions.
  • Place orders in line with build programmes, ensuring full accordance with drawings, specification and requirements. Attend site meetings to review progress, addressing any issues which arise, and completing stock management reports.
  • Carry out on‑site material inspections periodically.
  • On occasion, you may have to deputise for other members of the Buying team, including attending meetings as specified by your line manager.
