Overview
The Apprentice will provide a high-quality reception and support service within the Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre, based at Glenfield Hospital. The role requires good communication with patients and their relatives, the public, and a wide range of multi-professional staff, internal and external to the Trust. The Apprentice Administration and Receptionist assistant provides support with administrative duties to the research staff; a versatile approach and the ability to cope with several different tasks simultaneously are prerequisites of this post.
Confidentiality in all matters is of the utmost importance and all activities should be carried out in line with Trust Policies and Procedures on data collection and confidentiality.
A professional, helpful, and friendly manner is required as the receptionist is the first point of contact for all visitors to the unit. The post offers a supported learning environment to develop skills and knowledge to assist the apprentice to complete their qualification and progress in their career.
The duration of this post is fixed term for the duration of apprenticeship at 14 months.
Salary information:
£7.55 - £12.21 Hourly / >£270 per week up to NMW
£8.00 per hour from 01 April 2026
- To undertake and complete development programme leading to a National Standard/ Framework as part of an apprenticeship within the agreed timescales.
- To actively participate in the development plan, agreed with the line manager and the training provider.
- To provide a support service to all staff and visitors to the Respiratory Biomedical Research Centre.
- To provide correct up-to-date information and/or advice to patients, colleagues, other departments within the Trust, external organisations and the general public where necessary.
- Under supervision, undertake the duties for reception, including prioritising and arranging appointments by using various appointment systems.
- To deal with patients and external and internal staff enquiries in person or via the telephone in a courteous and confidential manner and provide assistance as required.
- To ensure patients’ safety and well-being in the waiting area and alert appropriate staff to any cause for concern.
- To obtain and prepare notes in readiness for clinics, investigations or at the request of staff within the Department; maintain a record of the transfer of notes to and from the Department using the appropriate Trust systems.
- To liaise with secretaries and other departments within the Trust, and external stakeholders as necessary, and to develop a good working knowledge of the service.
- To provide information and/or advice or refer onto other staff members where necessary.
- To arrange hospital transport for patients attending the department in accordance with Trust policy.
- Ensure accurate record keeping and updating of information and systems as appropriate within the scope of the position (paper and electronic records).
- To ensure that confidentiality for both patients and staff is always maintained in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
- To organise collection and delivery of internal and external post daily and its distribution to staff within the department.
- Update noticeboards, NIHR Leicester BRC Respiratory contact list and circulate emails.
- Any other duties as appropriate and determined by the Line Manager.
