POSITION OVERVIEW

While the Show Director does not have design authority, they are responsible for coordinating and leading the efforts of the Choreographer, Vocal Director, Teaching Artists, and other production staff to bring the vision to life. They also serve as a role model and mentor, supporting the artistic, educational, and social growth of campers.

Key Responsibilities 1. Vision Execution and Coordination
  • Execute the Artistic Director’s vision for the production, ensuring alignment with the curriculum provided by the Artistic Director and Director of Education.
  • Oversee the Choreographer, Vocal Director, and Teaching Artists, ensuring their work supports the artistic and educational objectives.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the production team, maintaining alignment and fostering collaboration.
2. Camper Experience and Behavior Management
  • Create and maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment.
  • Implement behavior management strategies to ensure a productive and engaging experience for all campers.
  • Serve as a role model and mentor, promoting teamwork, creativity, and a growth mindset.
  • Address behavioral challenges proactively, escalating concerns to the Business Manager or Board of Directors when necessary.
  • Develop daily goals that engage campers in learning and performance activities aligned with the curriculum.
3. The Process
  • Develop a Director’s Book that integrates the provided curriculum, schedule, and production requirements.
  • Adhere to a schedule of daily tasks and objectives for participants, ensuring alignment with educational and artistic goals.
  • Supervise assigned staff and interns, delegating tasks to ensure smooth operations and learning opportunities for campers.
  • Lead the creative team in achieving the Artistic Director’s goals while fostering a positive and collaborative environment.
4. The Audition Process
  • Conduct auditions in collaboration with the Assistant Director, Teaching Assistant, Stage Manager, Vocal Director, and Choreographer.
  • Make final casting decisions and communicate cast lists to parents within 7 days of auditions.
  • Provide cast lists to the Artistic Director for publication on the organization’s website.
5. The Rehearsal Process
  • Develop and maintain a rehearsal schedule with the Director of Education, ensuring it meets the needs of the production and participants.
  • Prepare daily goals for rehearsals, emphasizing skill-building, teamwork, and performance readiness.
  • Block and choreograph scenes, coaching campers in acting techniques and character development.
  • Attend all rehearsals, performances, design meetings, staff meetings, and production meetings.
  • Communicate with parents regarding rehearsal updates, accomplishments, and upcoming expectations.
6. Communication and Reporting
  • Work with the Executive Director to relay relevant information to parents and participants.
  • Communicate any behavioral or participation concerns to the Director of Health and Safety.
  • Fill out and submit rehearsal reports after each session if no Stage Manager is available, documenting progress and noting any issues.
7. Collaboration with Designers
  • Coordinate with designers to ensure all technical and design elements align with the Artistic Director’s vision.
  • Address production needs in collaboration with the Stage Manager, Assistant Director, Technical Director, and Teaching Assistant.
Qualifications
  • Experience in theater direction, teaching, or classroom management, particularly with youth programs.
  • Strong understanding of theater pedagogy, curriculum implementation, and behavior management strategies.
  • Exceptional organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage a team of professionals and interns.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to foster a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Familiarity with blocking, choreography, and acting coaching techniques.
Work Conditions
  • This is an on-site role during the summer camp session, requiring active participation throughout the 4-week period.
  • Flexibility is needed to accommodate evening and weekend commitments for rehearsals, performances, and meetings.
  • The position involves working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, requiring the ability to meet deadlines and uphold artistic standards within a condensed timeline.
