About the RoleBase location is flexible with some travel required. As an Insurance Manager you will lead the delivery of an effective insurance service for multiple SBUs, including Rail, Power T&D, Asset & Technology Solutions and Balfour Beatty Living Places, in accordance with the Balfour Beatty Insurance Strategy.
You will provide strategic and technical insurance-related input & guidance on the terms of agreements associated with construction projects. Engage with commercial teams in a thoughtful way, balancing commercial realities of tendering against the need to protect the SBU and the Group’s insurance programme.
What You'll Be Doing- Be recognised as the insurance expert for relevant SBUs, providing timely advice and support to Project and Commercial leads on all insurance and risk aspects of contract tenders, including uninsured risk exposure.
- Oversee all claims within the SBUs, lead or support the management and investigation of major claims (often over £50k), ensuring procedures are followed and documentation is issued to insurers on time.
- Ensure settlement of major claims within the framework set out in Delegations of Authority, monitoring settlement procedures in collaboration with the UK Head of Insurance.
- Determine requirements for project-specific insurance and manage procurement to deliver best value, advising on commercial rates for tender pricing.
- Advise SBUs on “owner‑controlled insurance programmes” (OCIPS).
- Analyse insurance claims, identify trends, risks and opportunities and report findings.
- Disseminate good practice and lessons learned from property damage claims and site surveys.
- Advise on group cover and maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry developments and regulation.
- Build effective relationships with external insurance brokers and service providers.
- Lead, develop and coach individuals to build high‑performing teams and create a talent pipeline.
- Live the Balfour Beatty Values and maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
- Support Group Renewal activities for all UK SBUs.
- Develop and deliver training, procedures, systems and forms to improve risk awareness and foster a mature risk‑management culture.
- Ability to work autonomously without day‑to‑day supervision.
- Proven senior managerial track record as an insurance professional.
- Experience leading a team and influencing performance.
- Experience handling major insurance claims from start to finish.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving and detail orientation skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication, delivering persuasive reports.
- Professional interpersonal skills with ability to influence senior management.
- Self‑starter, time‑management and value‑adding mindset.
- Strong relationship‑building and influencing capabilities.
- Excellent IT skills.
- Qualified to ACII.
- Knowledge of the construction industry or experience within a project‑based organisation.
