The Authorisations Division acts as FCA’s gateway for firms and individuals seeking to provide regulated financial services in the UK. We assess applications to ensure applicants meet the FCA’s standards.
Within the Division, the Approved Persons & Mutuals (APM) Department is responsible for authorisation and registration activities, including the FCA’s registering authority function for mutual societies.
As registering authority for more than 9000 mutual societies in the UK. This work is separate from our role for financial services firms under the Financial Services.
The Mutuals Team assesses and manages applications from societies, responds to external enquiries and processes annual return submissions.
This is a fast-paced role involving the management of multiple cases and enquiries simultaneously, requiring strong organisation, prioritisation and attention to detail.
Role responsibilitiesAssess applications from societies under seven pieces of mutuals legislation, managing cases to tight timescales while ensuring legal and regulatory compliance
Manage externally facing inboxes, including logging cases and responding to enquiries from a wide range of stakeholders
Manage your own caseload, including making decisions on applications within agreed frameworks and escalating complex or high‑risk cases where appropriate
Process annual return submissions from societies, ensuring content is accurate and suitable for publication
Investigate issues, identify risks and take appropriate action to achieve the right regulatory outcome in a timely manner
Work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to support effective decision‑making
Contribute proactively to team, departmental and divisional initiatives and activities
Support the effective day‑to‑day running of the Mutuals Team and delivery of its objectives
Minimum:
Strong organisational skills, with proven ability to manage a high‑volume and demanding workload at pace while maintaining quality and accuracy
Previous experience assessing and analysing information from multiple sources to reach appropriate, well‑reasoned outcomes
Essential:
Ability to analyse information from multiple sources, identify key issues and make balanced, well‑reasoned decisions within agreed frameworks
Sound judgement, with curiosity and motivation to investigate issues, identify risks and achieve appropriate regulatory outcomes
Proven ability to manage a varied and high‑volume caseload, prioritising effectively and working to tight deadlines
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain information clearly and adapt style for different audiences, including external stakeholders
Ability to build effective working relationships and engage constructively with internal and external stakeholders
High attention to detail, with a commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality work suitable for publication or formal use
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating resilience, accountability and effective self‑management
Confident using digital tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, to manage information and produce written outputs
