Freightliner Group Ltd – Join our team in Leeds or Crewe as an ERTMS Project Engineer on a full‑time, permanent basis.

Are you ready to support one of the most transformative projects in UK rail? Freightliner is looking for an ERTMS Project Engineer to spearhead the integration of ETCS across our locomotive fleet. This is your chance to work on cutting‑edge programmes like the East Coast Digital Programme and future ETCS route upgrades, ensuring operations remain safe, compliant, and future‑ready.

Reporting to the Lead Engineer, you will work with other project engineers and colleagues across the programme and wider industry, leading a small team of maintenance specialists to achieve key programme deliverables and outputs.

You will be at the heart of innovation‑leading engineering activities, collaborating with industry partners, and ensuring our depots and teams are ready for the next generation of rail technology.

Leeds or Crewe Vehicle Maintenance Facility (regular travel required).

• Lead ETCS fitment projects for Freightliner locomotives, ensuring safe, timely delivery and compliance.
• Drive maintenance readiness and training across depots.
• Work with suppliers and stakeholders to solve complex engineering challenges.
• Oversee design, installation, testing, and approvals for Putting into Use (PiU).
• Act as a subject‑matter expert on ETCS and high‑integrity software standards.
• Represent Freightliner in industry forums and working groups.
• Produce concise, expert reports, EWNs & position papers for the SLT to enable prompt, informed decision‑making.
• Support identification and management of engineering risks.

• Strong engineering background with experience in rolling‑stock change projects.
• Knowledge of traction and rolling‑stock systems (Class 59, 66, 70 or 90 desirable).
• Familiarity with ETCS standards, subsets, approvals and PiU responsibilities.
• Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, critical thinking and communication skills.
• Ability to manage complex projects under pressure and make sound decisions.
• Degree or equivalent technical qualification (HNC/HND).

• Experience with ETCS onboard systems and subsystems.
• Knowledge of CSM‑REA application and compatibility approvals.
