Our student body is diverse, inspiring, and ever‑growing. Consequently, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a full‑time Teacher of English as a Second Language at the Worthgate School. The English as a Second Language Department delivers a dynamic and academically focused curriculum across a range of programmes of study, including PRE A‑level, GCSE, A‑level, IB Diploma and University Foundation pathways. Our courses are designed to develop students' linguistic competence and academic communication skills, enabling them to access mainstream subjects and progress to leading universities in the UK and internationally.

TEACHER

OF ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (FULL‑TIME)

Applicants who enjoy supporting students' rapid language development and preparing them for high‑stakes English language examinations will find the Worthgate School a hugely rewarding and fulfilling place to work. English language proficiency is central to our students' academic success.

Consequently, we are seeking a teacher who can harness the international context of our classrooms, foster an inclusive environment for language development, and deliver engaging lessons that build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The successful candidate will also contribute to co‑curricular opportunities that support language acquisition beyond the classroom. We expect teachers to be involved in our super‑curricular activities, known as Electives, which may include Debate Society, Public Speaking, Academic Writing, and IELTS preparation workshops. Applicants should also demonstrate a strong commitment to their professional development. Worthgate offers excellent, fully funded opportunities for successful applicants to undertake NPQ qualifications (Leading Teacher Development, Senior Leadership, NPQ SENCO) in partnership with UCL, with multiple teachers enrolling each year.

As part of the wider CATS Global Schools group, the academic team also benefits from cross‑school collaboration and events, and staff are encouraged to develop and contribute to these professional networks.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • A recognised qualification in English Language Teaching, with a minimum of Cambridge CELTA (or equivalent);
  • DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or equivalent highly desirable; or
  • BA TEFL; BA TESOL or MA TEFL; MA TESOL;
  • Experience teaching English as a Second Language to international students aged 13‑19;
  • Experience preparing students for Cambridge English examinations, including A2 Key for Schools (KET), B1 Preliminary for Schools (PET), B2 First for Schools (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), and IELTS;
  • Experience teaching English B on the IBDP programme is desirable but not essential;
  • A strong understanding of language acquisition and effective ESL/EAL pedagogy;
  • An ability to promote high standards of academic English, literacy, and communication skills;
  • Responsive teaching strategies that incorporate high‑quality feedback and support rapid progress;
  • A proven record of excellent, reflective, and engaging classroom practice;
  • Enthusiasm to contribute to extra‑ and co‑cultural opportunities that enrich the student experience;
  • A commitment to ensuring students benefit from an enriched, holistic boarding school experience.
